Place an ad in a local pet publication or on Craigslist to sniff for that perfect doggie playmate. This is a great option if you don’t have a dog park in the area, don’t have neighborhood pups, you live in an apartment, or are just looking for that one special dog as a playmate.
In your ad just specify the type of playmate, playmates and situation you are looking for. Hey, your dog may be what some other dog is looking for! Not a big fan of placing a personal ad for your dog? You can also visit Dogster Forums and connect with other dog lovers and paw pals in your area. If you don’t care to have your shoes, iPhone, family heirlooms or remote control chewed up, then set rules and don’t give your dog human objects to play with. Your dog should have his or her own dog-safe toys to chew and play with. Good news: there are toys for every dog’s chewing preference, from soft to hard. When you catch your dog in the act chewing something off-limits, simply say the stern word “No.” Then replace the object with one of his or her own toys; soon your dog will learn the difference. Don’t forget to praise your dog when you see him playing with his own toys instead of your belongings. PawLux.com is a leading provider of all natural and eco-friendly products for dogs. Just like small kids, dogs are curious and can get into anything. Make sure to look around the house and yard for potential problem areas.
Keep electrical cords tucked away where they cannot be reached and chewed. Place household cleaners and chemicals on a high shelf or in a locked cabinet. Avoid houseplants and landscape plants that may be toxic to your dog. Pick up small toys or other objects that may be a choking hazard. The safety of your dog is your responsibility! Dogs are by their very nature social butterflies and love a good meet, sniff & playtime. By exposing your dog to variety of people, other animals, sights, and sounds at a young age they are less likely to be fearful of new experiences as they grow older. Every dog owner dreams of having a well-rounded fur companion and socializing does just that. Take your dog on car rides to fun places at an early age, so he doesn’t learn to associate a car ride with a trip to the vet!

Choose a costume that’s a little too original and you might have friends asking “What’s he supposed to be?” Rolling your eyes, you answer, “He’s the Dalai Lama, obviously.” Choose a popular costume and you’ll get instantaneous recognition, which can be very gratifying in an obvious way.
While original costumes are your own call, just FYI, it seems 2009’s most popular costumes will be vampires, Michael Jackson, vampires, Hannah Montana, vampires, pirates and, finally, vampires. You just can’t go wrong with vampires this year – and a black cape with red lining pretty much does it. Dogs have fangs and their eyes glow in the headlights. Bingo! Plus, vampires are so hot that you won’t be mocked for making it easy on yourself. Happy Howl-o-ween to all! Helen Fazio and her dog Raja are world travelers. Just as a light stick on a cord makes trick-or-treating children more visible at night, a disposable, inexpensive light stick taped to a dog’s collar, harness or costume makes your dog visible to passing cars as he walks beside you.
The sun will set at roughly 6 p.m. on October 31, 2009. Even though Halloween will coincide with a bright full moon, cloud cover or even tall buildings and trees could make the roadway dark. Protect your costumed doggy by making him glow as he parades about. Helen Fazio and her dog Raja are world travelers. Click here to visit their blog, and click here to follow them on Twitter. |

Yes, yes, we all know dogs can’t eat chocolate. But picture this scenario: Dressed-up children lugging bags of candy snack on chocolate bars while trick-or-treating. Naturally, some of the candy drops and the children reach into the bags for a replacement. Nobody cleans up the dropped candy because nobody would pick up dirty candy off the ground. Right? Nobody but a dog, that is.
Dog walkers, please be watchful the week following Halloween. While dogs are never allowed chocolate, they are mysteriously drawn to it and some doggies can spot and swallow a chocolate bar wrapper, dirt and all, in seconds. Taking your dressed-up dog out to trick-or-treat can be a lot of fun. Children love to dress up thematically with their dogs and only-pet families can join in the fun and meet the neighbors. Houses and apartments in dog-loving neighborhoods usually have a box of milk bones near the door for the canine trick-or-treaters. (What, you don’t? Shame!)
Just have make sure the canine costume doesn’t hang too low or it could trip your dog or get tangled in the leash. It’s hard to see what’s happening in the dark, and a hampered dog could get badly wound up in fabric and that retractable leash cord. Helen Fazio and her dog Raja are world travelers. When young dogs chase their tails, it’s often a sign of play. Suddenly they notice that protrusion from their back end and they try to catch it. Older dogs who chase their tail may be signaling something else, such as an anal gland infection, fleas or a neurological condition.
For some dogs, tail chasing becomes an obsession. This is often true in the Bull Terrier. Since Obsessive Compulsive Disorder comes out in other ways in this breed, such as playing with balls, it’s thought to be a genetic trait. These dogs will sometimes be so obsessed with their tail or ball, they won’t even stop for food. The human drug Prozac has proved to be helpful with this. Also, increasing exercise and eliminating anxiety-provoking events, such as confinement, may help. But non-compulsive chasing can just be a cry for attention – my pit bull Hudson knows he gets applause for the goofball that he is if he chases his tail and stops after getting a treat for his performance.
