If an Afghan hound or a Maltese winds up with mats in his coat, you can try squirting it with a human de-tangling spray or – better yet – one made for dogs – then tease the mat out with the gentle strokes of a comb, just as you would a person’s hair. |

Sometimes, a mat is so bad it is better to cut it out with a clipper blade(careful with the scissors). Then you can start fresh and keep up with the combing. Some mats are so tight to the skin it really hurts the dog if you try to pull it out.
You’re so right – but if it is really tight to the skin, you are much better off going to the vet who can remove it with clippers. Mats that are left for any length of time get tighter and larger and can cause not just pain but infection.
