The idea of putting a puppy through a few simple tests to determine what her temperament will be has gained popularity in the dog world. There are a variety of slightly different tests you can put your puppy through. The most well-known is called Volhard testing, named after the couple who standardized some basic testing techniques of a puppy’s personality as a way to predict what she will be like when grown.

There is a book called THE CANINE GOOD CITIZEN written in 1994 by Jack & Wendy Volhard and it gave a questionnaire that could be applied to any dog and help determine what its proclivities would be in any situation, its underlying personality, the elements you might want to know about before picking a puppy or choosing a dog to adopt. Vet behaviorists use various standardized questionnaires (Volhard is one of many and not even used that much professionally any more) in helping people evaluate their dogs as objectively as possible. As with any test, there is always the subjective opinion and interaction of the tester that comes into play, but I think it can be one of several useful tools in gathering as much information as you can about a dog who may spend 10 to 16 years sharing your life.
