The rule of thumb is that a puppy can hold her urine for the number of hours that correspond to her age in months, plus one. So an eight-week-old puppy – who is two months old – can hold it for three hours (2+1). Keep in mind this is the maximum time she can hold it but she may feel the urge before that.

While this may be true, I don’t think it is a good idea to make them wait more than 4-5 hours. I don’t think a 9 month old puppy should have to wait 10 hours to pee-or that an 11 month old should wait 12 hours! The author should have taken into consideration a maximum time limit in this article.

You make a really good point, Kelly. I didn’t mean to include puppies as they got older – I was only referring to really young puppies, which I should have been clear about. My concern was that people usually expect little ones to be able to go longer periods without relieving themselves than they really are physically able to. So thanks a million for your good catch!
