Dog Tips

Does Rover have a crusty, dry, or scaly nose? Some dogs, like some people, have naturally dry skin. This can be genetically influenced, or due to environment, diet, medication, or allergies. A simple and affordable fix is applying propylene glycol to the nose each day. You should be able to purchase propylene glycol from your favorite health store or pharmacy for next to nothing, literally! And it is unscented so won’t bother your dog’s sensitive sense of smell.

In reference to the dry and crusty nose with dogs, will the Propylene Glycol also help with a black nose that has lost pigment (spots of pink)? Thank you in advance….

Cynthia, thanks for the comment! To my knowledge, propylene glycol will not help with loss of pigment. It is merely an oil product, often used as a base in preparing solutions for topical human use.

A common cause of pigment loss on the nose is from using plastic bowls for feeding or water. Plastic abrades the skin on the nose and wears the pigment away. If you are using plastic dishes, try switching to ceramic or stainless steel. Pigment should slowly come back.
