Always carry treats when you’re with your dog. If you need to divert your dog’s attention from something he’s about to eat on the street, or you need to get him to come back to you when off-leash, having VERY tasty treats in your pocket helps a lot. And they should always be ones your dog really, really likes.

Don’t forget to remove the treats from pockets. We’ve ruined a few pair of jeans and several coats chewing through to get the treats Mom & Dad forgot about!

I always used to carry treats, but we live in an urban area where we encounter a lot of other dogs on our walks and I found that I became too, shall we say, popular. Some dogs were actually aggressing me, which was embarrassing for their owners. And in a dog park, if I have treats and another owner doesn’t, guess who their dog focuses on? I finally decided it was a better idea simply to get my dog to obey voice commands, with only praise and pets as his reward.

We live in NYC, where there are so many distractions, and treats really help my hyper-active Doodle to focus.
