Well, we can add chewing gum to the multitude of things we need to keep away from our dogs. Besides being a nuisance when he doesn’t keep his mouth closed, chewing gum can be also be harmful to your dog. When my eighty pound AmStaff downed a pack the other day, I jumped online to www.justanswer.com to find out the consequences. Turns out sugared gum isn’t too bad and may just cause a bad tummy ache. However, the Xylitol in sugarless gum can be toxic, and can cause liver failure.
So, if there’s a trail of gum wrappers down the hall or your dog is unexpectedly blowing bubbles, get him to a vet right away. |

This happened to my little Chihuahua. A young person by mistake gave my little girl doggie chewing gum. The gum contained Xylitol. I called pet emergency they said she could die and seconds counted. We had no idea how much had been ingested. Luckily my dog survived but I will never be really sure if it may have caused some liver damage. Xylitol is an artificial sweetener and is in many other products and drinks and is in toothpaste.
What a tough situation, since it is your grandchild. Good opportunity, I guess, to teach him/her how to act around pets. But a Chihuahua is fragile, I see how you have to be very careful. I’m so glad your pooch was O.K.!!!
Good to know this. I did not know that about xylitol… and certainly I will never consider using my toothpaste for my dog if I forget his doggy toothpaste when traveling. Thanks Kelly!
