While it can be easy to create your own products (a little vinegar and baking soda go a long way), not all of us have time. Luckily, there are many products on the market that are safe for the environment and your dogs. One that actually works is Mrs. Myers, which is available in luscious, but strong, scents. Another cheaper brand, is available at Target. You can also find enzyme-packed products like Bi-O-Kleen at places like Whole Foods.
Even with safe products, it is best to keep them away from your dogs and avoid spraying around them. But a sneeze from Fido because you used too much Mrs. Meyers around his bed is much better than a trip to the vet because of Clorox ingestion. Kelly is a dog columnist and pet writer. I love what you point out, as few folks realize that our pets stomp around on whatever we clean our floors and carpets with, only to then wander off and lick their paws. It may seem a little over-the-top to some, but earlier this year I replaced both my girls’ dog beds and toys with organic ones made with non-toxic recycled materials. My thinking is this: They chew on and often inadvertently swallow a toy piece or fuzz here and there, and who knows what they breathe in day-in-day-out as they sleep? Are my beds organic? Hehe… ummm… no…
My dog’s scratching and licking of his fur/skin completely stopped when I switched to environmentally friendly cleaning products for his bedding and the rest of the house. Lying around in and breathing the nasty chemicals contained in most cleaners day in day out is terribly unhealthy.
Simple Green is great also. Bio-degradable, pleasent light oder, mix to differant stregnths for almost all cleaning job, expecilly pet related. Acts as aair freshener as you are leaning. Safe around children, two and four legged.
Simple Green is a great one – thanks. I think a great point is raised – we think of every safety caution and comfort for our pets but I think we often forget ourselves.
