For a hungry pet that has waited it out to eat or drink over a long flight, waiting to get to the hotel or vacation home after a flight can prolong his or her hunger for even more hours and can lead toward low blood sugar and fatigue. Remember, you got snacks on the plane, but your dog did not.
How about stopping at the closest quickie mart as you drive from the airport to pick up a couple of jars of toddler food meat sticks (such as Gerber Graduates or any other brand)? They’re low salt, pure food approved for babies, and they taste like little hot dogs to your hungry traveler. And don t forget a bottle of water to wash it down. I use the Gerber Graduates for a quick snack too but read the ingredients label on all but the meat snacks they contain onion which of course I don’t use.
I don’t think that’s such a great idea; baby food is the only category less regulated by the FDA than pet food. Hate to sound snobby, but I wouldn’t even give my dog Gerber.
Any ideas what to do with a dog when travelling and one would like to spend a couple hours out sightseeing sans dog ?
Patty, some hotels actually do have pet sitting services. I’m not a big advocate of leaving a pet alone in a hotel room, crated or not. They usually don’t enjoy it. If your plan is to go out on your own, pick a hotel that has pet sitting and pre-book it. Yes, it costs more. The Lowes Hotels often have pet sitting services.
What I have done for years with my pets since I do not fly is when I stop to eat or sometimes before leaving on the trip is pack a cooler. If I wait to get something on the way I ask them to prepair a hamburger or boneless chicken breast with no seasoning. They do not question it since I have to ask them to leave it off my food as well. We also have a filter on our water at home so I get the 2 gallon water jugs and fill them for the drive. This works great since I too have to be carefull about drinking nonfiltered water due to health problems. This helps too in keeping expences down on the trip. Oh and to keep it cool if mommy has to go inside without me she uses the extra key and leaves the engine running with the AC on and the parking break. .
