Your dog may play dumb when you tell him not to eat the cat’s food, but don’t let him fool you. He understands perfectly well. Because not only is he smart, but your dog understands up to 165 words including signals and gestures, giving him roughly the same mental abilities as a 2-year-old person. We’re not making this stuff up, we promise.

Leading canine researcher Stanley Coren, PhD, broke the news during his speech “How Dogs Think” at the recent American Psychological Association’s Convention. As it turns out, some super brainy dog breeds can even master 250 words including signals and gestures.

Read more about Coren’s research and see his top and bottom five smartest dog breeds here.

Re todays article from Daily Dog Tip about what dogs can do, “say,” and understand:

My 3-year-old Greater Swiss Mountain Dog – Border Collie mix will “talk” to me when I ask him. When he acts like he wants something, I just say, “talk to me” and he does. He makes a sort of growly sound that isn’t really growling. He is the only dog I have ever had who does this. He learns things very quickly and imitates a lot of what he sees. I wanted to comment on this article for that reason. Unfortunately, my Milo also has EPI which, for the time being anyway, is stabilized and fairly under control. Cross paws for us that it stays that way! Thanks!

I knew it! I’ve been scolding my dog for eating the cat food all week! Just wait ’til I get home. She’s going to get a piece of my mind!
