Your dog can’t help it. He’s genetically programmed to chew stuff. So to spare your shoes the slobber, you do what any self-respecting pet parent can – you serve up the rawhide bones and chews. And just like that, hours pass and your dog happily munches away, cleaning his teeth while he’s at it. So there you have it, rawhide rules. It would be criminal to take it away. Or would it?

I used to give my three dogs rawhide all the time until Frieda, one of our Berners, choked on a piece of rawhide and almost died. My husband could not help her by doing the Heimlich Maneuver, but on his way to the hospital with Frieda, she threw up the thing. Positive outcome: I became Red Cross dog and cat first aid certified months later. Rawhide is now forbidden at home.

I give Daisy rawhide sometimes. She isn’t a big fan of it though and one piece can last her months. She never chews off big pieces or gulps it. It does give her something to chew on though when she feels like it.
