Dog Tips

These are a great way to beat the heat, but can also help with separation anxiety. Just fill a Kong with peanut butter (or yogurt and anything else your dog might like) and then freeze it. If your dog loves peanut butter, but hates it when you leave, save this treat for ONLY when you leave. This way the dog will associate your leaving with something fun. And the fact that it is frozen will keep them occupied for awhile.

If your dog is overweight, try this icy treat. Put just a dot of peanut butter in the bottom of the tiny end of the kong. Freeze it. Then add salt free soup stock or apple juice and freeze it again. My dog loves this!

We have been doing this since she was a puppy and now at two she associates us giving her the treat as us leaving and wont touch it till we get back

I am going to use this idea!! I’ve been trying to find something I can give Daisy that is special after her ear cleanings. She hates them.

You can also stuff Kongs with yogurt (if your dog tolerates dairy), canned dog food, and meatballs! I’ve also used bits of steak, ground raw meats, and tuna fish in Kongs. Frozen Kongs are messy, so are best to give outside or on an easy to clean surface.

    David,

Do you ever give her the Kongs when you are at home? If she gets them when you are at home and when you are leaving, Kongs will not be a reliable predictor of your absence anymore.

Does your dog like peanut butter? Is she hungry when you leave?
