You will find a wide variety of dogs at an off leash dog park so your dog is sure to hit it off with one of them. This is a great way to get to know neighbors and interact with their dogs. Often times if dogs like each other the owners will arrange for a meet and sniff at a dog park at a specific time.
Dog Park USA and Dogster Local help dog owners find the pet-friendly parks close to their homes or in destinations they’re planning to visit. I’m glad dog parks are available, but I’ve found them to be the scene of more drama than a reality TV show! I’m talking owners here, not dogs. Every time I’ve gone there’s been some sort of a verbal altercation between people over their dog’s behavior.
You really have to know how your dog reacts in almost all situation BEFORE you bring them to a dog park. Most important is a VERY reliable recall and the ability to ignore another dog if necessary.
You’re high, right? Exactly BECAUSE dogs are pack animals with a pack mentality, throwingthem in with “strange” dogs is an awful, awful idea, especially in an off-leash environment, and no reputable “trainer” or “expert” would EVER recommend it…if thisis anindicationof the kind of “expert training advice” available here, folks are best off reading carefully – and then doing the exact OPPOSITE of what it says! Dogs DO need social interaction, but “their person” and whatever carefully chosen, individually vetted, and strictly controlled “dog playmates” their responsible owner can find for them will MORE than meet that need! If your dog has 100% rock-solid “recall”, but the two (or three or four) dogs attacking him DON’T, what do you THINK will happen?!?!??! Geesh!
Barry. You have to know your dog, and be aware of dog language/behavior. Just like at any human party, there will be someone who does not get along. being able to control your dog is paramount in any situation. My dogs have always gone to off leash parks and in the past 20 years I can count on one hand the number of serious altercations, and it is usually a result of an improperly trained/controlled dog. You tell kids to stay away from bullies, the same is true for dogs. Get to know who the troublemakers are and go the other way when you see them!
