If your dog has been walking on the hot pavement, putting rubbing alcohol on his paw pads gives a quick all over cool down and instant relief. In extreme situations, a rub down with an alcohol dampened cloth on the chest and belly helps too. Remember to keep the alcohol way from his mouth (rubbing alcohol is NOT for drinking) and out of his eyes. Of course, post-heat care is no substitute for good sense where dogs and heat are concerned.

Hi Tracy,
This is one of my all time favorite Tips as I was talking just yesterday on my Radio Show about this tip and how to do it.
What is most important are a few things to really make sure of before doing this tip
1. Make sure there is not one open scratch on your Dogs Paw as this will not only hurt but will then make the next time you want to help them by cooling them down or try to clip their nails some dogs remember the last time and will not let you near them
2. At the same time it is also important to be running cool not cold water under their bellies the spot where there is no fur – this will ensure a safe and fast way to start to help a Dog who is over heating
3m last but not least – Is to take a cool damp small towels and place over the ear one at a time gently as this is another great spot to help cool your Dog down
It also important to remember never force water down your dogs throat as they too know they must cool off a bit before drinking or else they get sick.
If your Dog does not cool down within say 15 minutes try wetting the whole dog down but if their tongue stays swollen then be sure to get to you Vets office as soon as you can.
Thank You

Question: The alcohol does not dry out the pads?
Also, I am going to be gone for a few days. There is a housesitter, but he has a job. We are finally getting summer here and it’s supposed to be in the 90′s. My plan is to put up the smallest size kiddy pool (he loves them) and keep a low flow going constantly. He’s a medium sized and strong dog. Do you see any issues with this?
Just be sure if you are putting Alcohol on pads that they aren’t BURNT from the hot pavement. Yes, that can happen! Dabbing alcohol onto a burned or raw pad is a very BAD idea!

I would have never thought of rubbing alcohol on it’s paws. It sure does not take long for them to get over heated. So, everyone please be fore warned about if it is even warm to you, they long fur or any fur on the baby is much worse for them. I work once in awhile with a girl whose dog recently died from heat. It was really heart breaking and she cried and cried. Evidently she was at work and the girls tried to cool him down but it was too late, brain damage and it just was too late, he could not recover.
I personally recommend leaving your pets inside in the air conditioning when you leave the house for any length of time at all. That also goes for cold weather as well. JMO and all.
IMO I would avoid using rubbing alcohol on a dog as a quick cool down. Simply because you are never sure if there may be a cut on his pad, I would think the alcohol would sting and dry the pads even more. I think using a hose if possible or a cool wet towel after a walk would work much better than rubbing alcohol especially on the chest and belly that would be very drying to the skin.
