Feed the puppy in the crate because food gives a positive association. Some puppies won’t go all the way inside the crate to eat: if yours is like that, at least you can put the dish inside the opening so the puppy has to put his head inside. Once he eventually goes all the way in, close the door behind him but wait to open it the moment he finishes since he’ll more than likely have to go potty right away.

i give a treat immediately after my 2 dogs go in their crate so they actually look forward to the command “cage” and RUN towards it! we keep the door open and they go in and out of it to play with a toy, or nap..they don’t look at it as a punishment(we also don’t use it as punishment), but their “cave”
I always feed Mollie in her cage. We leave the door open when we are home and she goes in there to take naps! She loves her cage.
After reading some comments made by volunteers on dog crating during disaster relief efforts, I got serious with getting my mastiff pups crate trained. The dogs who were crate trained made the volunteers’ jobs so much easier.
What are the pros and cons of cage4 training a 10 month old Basset Hound (very LARGE) ? She has been horrible to house train and we have read that “scent hounds” are difficult. We let her out every time she wakes up and at least once an hour. She only pees on the throw rugs in the living room. We have a very large kitchen with a kiddy door where she sleeps at night. We will not pee in there????? We are confused. We also go out with her (weather permitting) and praise her when she goes.
