I suggest starting off by playing a backyard game such as fetch to get some of your dog’s energy out. If you don’t have a fenced-in yard, you can use a long leash (20-50 feet) to allow the dog to run while keeping him safe. Communication can come in the form of treats (I suggest treats that can be doled out with a long wooden spoon such as peanut butter, cream cheese, cheese whiz as it prevents the fumbling of hands in pockets and dropped treats on sidewalks) or toys.
Dogs that have allergy issues may need to earn their meals on walks. If the dog is walking next to you, treat him! That is after all what you want. Make it worth his while. Start small with a few steps for every reward and then grow out how many steps you take.
