We all know about puppy mills and how cruel their existence is to dogs. But you might not have heard of puppy auctions. These warehouse events are legal in Ohio, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri. Small breeds are stacked in crates and cages with a number around their necks that is called out for bids. They are your typical puppy mill dogs, ill and scared and nothing like the breed they represent.
Folks living in one of the above states can write their legislators about this practice. You can also help create legislation to ban puppy auctions by writing letters and passing around petitions. And, of course, never buy a puppy from a puppy mill. Adopt or do your homework to find responsible breeders in your area. Kelly is a pet writer. She lives in the Boston area with her three pit bulls and one neurotic cat. |

my state, iowa, has made puppy mills a crime, wish all states would do this
I know we are always told never to buy Puppy Mill puppies, but it is not the puppies fault. They suffer enough at the hands of humans, should they not also be loved by someone. I say gather all the Puppy Mill owners, stick them in a cage and auction them off to the highest in Afghanastan.
Dr. Nancy Kay wrote a very informative article on the horrors of dog auctions on her blog in January just before the Ohio dog auction – http://speakingforspot.com/blog/?p=2009 and also has an excellent article on “A Dozen Simple Ways to be sure you are Working with a Responsible Breeder – http://speakingforspot.com/blog/?p=749. Both are great reads.
Ban all Puppy Mills, Backyard Breeders & Auctions ! There are way too many poor dogs in Rescues, Humane Society’s & just running the streets ! Way too much in-breeding causing deformities, allergies, deafness, & a host of other problems…..and who suffers…the poor dog. God have mercy !!!
I HATE PUPPY MILLS! I pride myself in being a responsible breeder, I love each and every one of my grandpups and personally ensure they are going to an appropriate home. Where are the breeders (mills) that sell their pups to a pet store or broker??? On vacation? IT IS JUST SO WRONG! Please be sensible and do not support their actions. I know it is not the pups’ fault. They need a loving home as much as any other puppy. The mills must somehow be stopped. Please do whatever you can. XOXO
I don’t think here in the UK puppy mills exist – I certainly hope they don’t. I was appalled to read about these poor little frightened dogs. Can’t anything b e done to make such things illegal?
As much as I hate to say it, I believe I may have bought my dog at a puppy mill. I never got to see his parents and after I got him home I noticed the sores. When I took him to the vet the next day I found out just how sick he was. Even though I was told they had a “return policy” there was no way I was taking him back there. I think of all the pain he was in and I don’t want another animal to suffer as he did. He is 6 years old now and healthy, but he sure had a rough start.
So what do you propose to do with the puppies from these puppy mills…. I’ve been brainwashed not to buy from a puppy mills, but my heart goes out to these puppies… what happens to them? 3 of my dogs were strays, and one from a rescue… but what about the caged pups you are saying not to buy? Do you think they are humanely treated till a loving owner is found… come up with a better statement than – Don’t buy from Puppy Mills.
I am totally against any kind of puppy mills or auctions. We should keep trying to do what ever we can to stop this crualty.
