The Daily Dog Tip

Whole industries have adjusted their policies as hotels and retailers realize that being dog-friendly is good for business. There are now websites that specialize in helping traveling dog owners find comfortable places to stay such as PetsWelcome.com. Mainstream publications such as Travel & Leisure now publish a periodic pet travel-related column. The more recent phenomenon of the open-air “lifestyle” shopping center has also helped raise awareness of the commercial benefits of allowing pets. As dog owners, we need to make sure that our dogs are on their best behavior when in public. It goes without saying that dogs must be leashed and properly trained to help prevent potty accidents and incidents with other dogs. Good behavior will help open the “doggy door” at new places in the future.

If we take our que from European countries, dogs may eventually be allowed to relax under our table while we eat at fine dining establishments. We must, however, have extremely well-behaved dogs in order for this to happen. While traveling in Amsterdam, we noticed how dogs walk off leash behind or beside their owner and never wander or sniff another dog. Misbehaviour is very frowned upon. The only place a dog is not allowed is the butcher shop. Do you think North Americans would do the necessary training in order for our best buddies to be able to accompany us and behave in his place, quietly and without fuss, under the table in a 5 Star Restaurant?

Oh, PS, Raja sits with me in overseas restaurants all the time. No problems.

Yes, yes, yes! “Good behavior DOES help open the “doggy door” at new places!” I can’t stress this enough to friends who want to take their “trained” dogs out in public. It only takes ONE bad dog to ruin it for ALL dogs!

If german and french people have done it for many years, why not americans, canadians and mexicans (I am)? It is so great to travel in those countries and find friendly and clean dogs all over: trains, buses, restaurants, drug stores, appartment stores, hotels, etc. It is just a matter of animal and human education!!!!
