The Daily Dog Tip

Small dogs are often little bundles of energy, until they run out of steam and then they’re down for the count. Some little dogs can even be prone to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and hypoglycemia can be dangerous. Check out your little dog’s gums. If they are white-ish, show that little mouth to your vet. A sugar syrup your vet can prescribe and a conscious nutrition system can save his life.

THat is fine to give the information on Hypoglycemia in small dogs. However, what breeds are the most likely to have the tendency toward this condition. When left with small dogs, there are a lot of small dogs in the world. How small, what breeds, etc. THis does not help people to look out for this if their particular breed may be more likely to have the tendency to have this condition. Most people will think, well, my dog doesn’t have this, he is not small enough, or my dog is too busy all the time. More information needs to be given. NOT JUST A STATEMENT THAT IMPLIES ALL SMALL DOGS.

I had a 50 pound Kelpie who was diagnosed with hypoglycemia at 3 years of age. My vet just said to have caramels on hand whenever he played hard (which was every day — playing ball, rollerblading, or at the beach)! It was a cheap fix, and it worked great! A roll of fruit Lifesavers or Starbursts will work in a pinch as well. So will the whip cream from your latte! So, it’s not just little dogs………
By the way, Fraser lived to be 14, and his death had nothing to do with his hypoglycemia. Kelpies only live to between 11-14 years, so he was just really old. I really miss that dog!!!

Puppies & small dogs who eat an all natural raw diet do NOT suffer from low blood sugar. We feed our pups a ground, raw diet as soon as they are weaned from their Mother & not 1 of them has ever had a hypoglycemic issue. They are fed 4 times a day to start with, then it’s decreased to 3 times, & finally down to 2 meals with 1 snack daily. Check out the amazing health benefits online that pets get from a raw diet.

Be very careful if your vet diagnoses a young puppy with Hypoglycemia, they often use that as a misdiagnosis for Liver Shunts!
