… the promise of getting a dog right after the holidays is a wonderful gift. If you are thinking of getting a dog for someone as a holiday present, why not give a promise instead?

Then, after the chaotic holidays, everybody can go together to pick the perfect dog and bring her to a peaceful, welcoming home where she will be the main event.

I tend to agree, but I have to admit I received puppies from Santa on two occasions. The first was Lady. She was a golden cocker spaniel, and – you guessed it – it was right after the movie Lady & The Tramp came out. She even came in a hat box like the movie. Sadly, Lady only lived a couple of years as she contracted an illness that was unknown at the time but paralyzed her bit by bit. I was only 2 when she came to live with us, but I remember it vividly. The second was four years later when our first Dachshund, Gretchen, joined the family. that was a much happier story. Gretchen lived with our family for 17 years. I guess a puppy from Santa isn’t truly a bad thing, it’s just necessary for all the preparations to be made and everyone should be willing to take the necessary steps to integrate the new family member immediately.

As much as I would love a perfect life for all pets I must admit many of our training clients purchase dogs as presents….such a BAD idea. Please purchase a crate..toys…books..CDs …but not the pet. Compulsive purchses are never a good idea.

A newly purchased puppy needs to have the first check-up immediately…we like within 48 hours…try reaching a vet during the holidays …if you have any health issues you will be spending a great deal of money at the emergency hospital..

So please plan …research and make sure you are thinking a good deal about this 10 to 15 year pet you will be living with…

    Happy Holidays.

P.S. As a dog educator and breeder I would NEVER sell a puppy at the holidays.
