As the modern workplace continues to evolve, more and more progressive companies are allowing employees to bring their dogs to work with them. But no matter how much you love your pet, dogs are guests within the working environment, so put your co-workers first.
Always check with your co-workers before bringing Fido to the office. Some people have allergy issues and others are simply afraid of dogs, but others find having a dog in the office reduces stress and makes work feel more welcoming. It can be great to have a tail-wagging pup cozying up to you while you’re working! If your employer has not welcomed pets in the past, ask your boss to consider a special one-day event to warm people up to the idea of pooches at work.

Doctor, may Fluffy have a little something to keep her calm during flight? The best answer is
“NO!” During flight, whether in cabin or in the hold, decreased air pressure can make it a little harder for dogs to breathe, especially short-nosed dogs like Pugs, Bulls and Pekes. Also, tranquilizers cause dizziness, which can cause nausea or vomiting and disequilibrium in the kennel and upon landing. A dog who suffers a fall in kennel in flight cannot get help for hours. The skies will be friendlier for dogs who have been gently accustomed to their carriers, not dogs drugged and swept aloft. Helen Fazio and her dog Raja are world travelers. While many beaches allow dogs before 8 a.m. and after 6 p.m., most of the beaches allow dogs on the beach all day as soon as the summer season is over. And to be honest, summer is a very hot time to expect your dog to lounge in the sun all day by the sea. If you have been feeling guilty about going to the beach without your dog all summer, make a note of when the summer season is over. After that, you can bring Fluffy and Furry to the seaside to enjoy the ocean and sand without the crowds and the heat. Bet you’ll love that big, private beach too!

Whether your dog has flown in cargo or in cabin, he will be delirious when he’s finally deplaned and on the ground. All he wants to do is get out, run and relieve himself. Not so fast. The area outside the baggage claim is a dangerous four-lane highway of cars, vans, buses and taxis. Before you leave the building, face your carrier toward an inside corner, open the door or flap just a crack, slide your hand in and attach the leash to your dog’s collar before opening the door fully. Then walk him on leash outside the building and toward a safe area.

Planning on your dog’s first airplane flight? Just like the pilots, the flying dogs have to go to flight school. Buy the airline approved dog carrier far in advance and then use the carrier to transport your dog to happy destinations: the dog park, his play date, the doggy bakery boutique. Slowly increase time in the carrier during longer and longer transport. And praise, praise, praise. Well-prepped flying dogs don’t need tranquilizers.

Whole industries have adjusted their policies as hotels and retailers realize that being dog-friendly is good for business. There are now websites that specialize in helping traveling dog owners find comfortable places to stay such as PetsWelcome.com. Mainstream publications such as Travel & Leisure now publish a periodic pet travel-related column. The more recent phenomenon of the open-air “lifestyle” shopping center has also helped raise awareness of the commercial benefits of allowing pets. As dog owners, we need to make sure that our dogs are on their best behavior when in public. It goes without saying that dogs must be leashed and properly trained to help prevent potty accidents and incidents with other dogs. Good behavior will help open the “doggy door” at new places in the future.

If you’re planning on going away and leaving your pet it will be a lot easier on her if you have a friend or someone your dog has never met stick around your house for 15 or 20 minutes. They can tell you how the pet handled your absence.

Roll the window down only enough for the dog’s head to fit out. Never lower the window as far as the dog’s chest level because she can jump out if she sees something to chase. Also, she could be thrown out of the car if you happen to be hit from the side.

If your dog gets carsick and throws up in the car, try the homeopathic remedy of giving a capsule of ginger half an hour before a car ride. Ginger capsules are readily available in all health food stores.

Whether a friend or professional is looking after your pet when you’re away, be prepared in the event that THEY have an emergency and cannot fulfill their obligation. Make sure you have a backup plan that includes the telephone number of a friend or relative who can take over.
