Oh… the dreaded bath. But what choice do you have? Once your dog rolls in something stinky it’s bath or bust, so give these tips a try to ease your pup into bath time.

First, have your pup play games around the tub (or sink for small dogs) so it’s a fun place to be. Then, place your dog in the tub with no water in it, roll his favorite toy around in there and offer attention and treats. Do this repeatedly, slowly increasing the time he’s in the tub.

Next, fill the tub with half an inch of warm water so he gets his feet wet when he gets in and repeat the procedure, again with treats and praise. Add a little more water each time, eventually pouring water over him and in no time, you’ll have a sparkling clean bathing beauty.

While it can be easy to create your own products (a little vinegar and baking soda go a long way), not all of us have time. Luckily, there are many products on the market that are safe for the environment and your dogs. One that actually works is Mrs. Myers, which is available in luscious, but strong, scents. Another cheaper brand, is available at Target. You can also find enzyme-packed products like Bi-O-Kleen at places like Whole Foods.

Even with safe products, it is best to keep them away from your dogs and avoid spraying around them. But a sneeze from Fido because you used too much Mrs. Meyers around his bed is much better than a trip to the vet because of Clorox ingestion.

Kelly is a dog columnist and pet writer. She lives in the Boston-area with her three pit bulls and one neurotic cat.

The Tote Dog Bed, which runs about $100, is disguised as a bag and actually unfolds into a beautiful travel bed where ever you go. This is perfect for the beach, grandma’s house, car, camping – you name it. It’s made from Sunbrella fabric which is waterproof, fade-resistant and easy to clean. There’s even a handy side pocket for stashing important vet records, snacks, toys and meds. Remove the inside pillow and toss it in the wash and you’re good to go! Also, made here in the USA – and that’s the coolest part of all!

For ultra safe, green cleaning in your home, try white vinegar and water mixed together in a spray bottle instead of toxic, expensive store bought products. I’ve tried every product under the sun, even expensive ones from my vet. White vinegar diluted with water always does a better job. It does wonders for windows, stainless steel appliances, tile floors… and you’ll save big bucks, too! For an extra fresh smell, you can add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to add a nice fragrance to the mix.

The best thing that allergy sufferers can do with their dog is to give a weekly bath. What people are allergic to in any dog is the dander, or dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of their skin. If you wash them away frequently you are removing the trigger for the person’s allergies.

It is definitely worth it to invest in a top-notch dog bed – one that is the right thickness and firmness for your dog. It will go a long way towards dissuading him from making your furniture into his bed.

Before you buy a dog bed try taking the cover off and on – if it’s easy, buy the bed. Don’t buy a dog bed with a cover that is a pain to remove – you’ll be less like to wash it and bed covers should be washed frequently.

Young dogs and very sensitive ones cannot tolerate long grooming sessions. The path of least resistance is to groom half of the dog at a time! Do one side or end of the dog in the morning and the other one at night.

The little shock that can occur in very dry weather – a tingle when you touch the dog – can be avoided by dampening your hand or brush with water, or by standing on a hard surface floor before making contact.

To clean your dog’s ears, use an unscented baby wipe wrapped around your finger. The moistened cloth will allow you to get in the crevices and really wipe the outer ear canal clean.
