This week we’re exploring ways to have a dog in your life if you don’t have or can’t have a dog of your own. I bet you have family and friends with dogs. (And if you don’t, perhaps step one is to expand your circle of friends!)

Pet sitting or checking on a friend’s dog when they are away would be a nice thing to do and give you some quality time with a dog. Your friend would probably even let you walk their dog now and then or take their pup to the local dog park for a play date. To make sure everything goes well, be sure you stay in line with your friend’s disciplinary philosophy so you don’t confuse Fido or upset your friend.

It is important for your dog/jogging partner to get his daily exercise. But keep in mind with summer comes heat waves and dogs don’t have the option of taking off a layer like you do to cool down. Dogs aren’t efficient in the cooling department so their only option is panting and sweating through the pads of their paws. So exercise and take your dog on early morning or evening walks around the neighborhood when temperatures are low.

Dogs can suffer from heatstroke so make sure your dog is not overworked on those hot days. Start with slower, shorter walks and gradually increase according to your pet’s ability and health. Older dogs, along with dogs with short, pushed in faces and/or dark coats, have a higher risk of suffering from heat stroke. Keeping your dog hydrated and their water bowl filled is VERY VERY important!

Most Americans do not get enough exercise, and that is the same for their dogs. Your four-legged buddy needs exercise too. You may not excel in your own exercise regimen, but you should ensure your dog gets his exercise in. You can get your exercise while you go for a walk with your dog, getting two treats with one act.

If you are unable to go for a walk with your dog every day (a long enough one to call it “exercising”) make sure that your buddy gets exercise in other ways, like playing ball, tug-of-war, or fetching his toys. Allow and encourage other people who have a relationship with your dog to play with him as well.

Another great way to get your dog some good exercise, along with some excellent socialization, is to set up play dates with other dogs or make a trip to the nearest dog park. Taking those extra steps can help to keep your dog healthy for years to come.

We feel that daily exercise is extremely important for many reasons. Daily walks help release pent-up energy, encourage a daily routine, and allow dogs to experience the outdoors and all of the smells that come with it. It is also a great bonding experience between you and your dog. Getting into a twice daily-routine will surely be appreciated by your pup(s) and is a great way for you to get exercise too!

Do not leave tennis balls unattended with your dog. If he or she has strong jaws and chews on the ball it can pop into the back of her throat and cut off the air supply. Also, dogs who chew on tennis balls can wear down their teeth on the tough outer fuzz.

Just as with people, swimming is wonderful exercise because the lack of gravity protects joints and muscles. Also, in hot weather it is the only safe exercise for a dog during the hottest days.

Larger breeds have skeletal systems that mature at a slower pace so wait until after two years of age to take your large breed dog on long runs with you.
