Place an ad in a local pet publication or on Craigslist to sniff for that perfect doggie playmate. This is a great option if you don’t have a dog park in the area, don’t have neighborhood pups, you live in an apartment, or are just looking for that one special dog as a playmate.

In your ad just specify the type of playmate, playmates and situation you are looking for. Hey, your dog may be what some other dog is looking for! Not a big fan of placing a personal ad for your dog? You can also visit Dogster Forums and connect with other dog lovers and paw pals in your area.

We’re not making this up. “Tennis Ball Mouth” is the official term for dogs with a pattern of worn teeth from gnawing on balls and carrying them around in their mouths for hours a day – both of which may cause dental problems. The veterinary jury is still out on how concerned pup parents should be it, but here are a few ideas you can discuss with your vet:

1. Carry the ball to and from the dog park and anytime your dog’s not actively playing with it to reduce the amount of time it’s in his mouth.

2. Supervise your big dog if he chews on balls and inspect the balls afterward for loose bits that can cause choking, or simply leave tennis balls only for fetch.

3. Choose tennis balls just for dogs that are less abrasive on the teeth and come in various sizes.

For those that love a good run, taking your exercise buddy on a brisk jog will suffice. When taking you dog on a jog or biking adventure make sure to remember these key points:

– Take rest breaks because dogs get tired, too

– Carry plenty of water to quench your and your dog’s thirst

– On hot days jog or bike with your pup early in the morning or late evening when the sun goes down to avoid heatstroke and health complications

– NEVER take your dog jogging or biking if they have serious medical problems, without the consent of a vet

You will find a wide variety of dogs at an off leash dog park so your dog is sure to hit it off with one of them. This is a great way to get to know neighbors and interact with their dogs. Often times if dogs like each other the owners will arrange for a meet and sniff at a dog park at a specific time.

Dog Park USA and Dogster Local help dog owners find the pet-friendly parks close to their homes or in destinations they’re planning to visit.

Toys are meant to be a fun way for you and your dog to exercise and bond. Toys that are too small can present choking hazards and can prove lethal. One general rule of thumb is that if the toy is small enough to be dropped down the center of a roll of toilet paper, it is too small for your dog. Toys with squeakers or other small parts that can be chewed off can also be hazardous. Always supervise your dog’s play.

Dogs make great ice breakers when it comes to (human) dating… People reveal more of themselves when there’s no pressure. Do an activity with your dog and your date where you both can just relax in the conversation and enjoy the moment.

Always speak respectfully to your dog. Berating or speaking down to your dog may be viewed as how you may talk to humans as well.

  1) Adopt a dog – Be a hero!

2) Participate in dog training classes, agility, Reiki, dog therapy, T-touch. A great way to learn something for you and your dog while meeting others.

3) Talk with your dog. Dogs don’t judge what you say and they won’t throw it back in your lap later.

4) Walk with your dog. Dogs need about 30 minutes of exercise everyday and so do you!

5) Socialize with your dog. Dogs are the perfect ice-breakers – take part in social communities like Dogster and LeashesandLovers to make more connections with dog lovers world-wide.

When it comes to socializing, dog lovers have an advantage. Our pets can break the ice for us. But, here are some guidelines to make more friends and maybe even a date!

1) Even though you’re with your crowd, don’t refer to yourself as your dog’s mommy.

2) Make a playdate for your pets if you have an interest in another dog owner – and “my pet has a headache” is an easy out should there not be animal attraction.

3) Don’t wear black to the party as it shows more fur/hair.

4) You may talk about your dog, but be sure to ask them questions too.

5) Hold back from smooching your pooch in front of a new prospect until at least the third date!

Now, even your dog toys can be safe and eco-friendly. West Paw Designs has revolutionized dog toys by creating a whole line of plush toys made from recycled Zogoflex – a fabric and fill made from recycled soda bottles. Hands down, one of the strongest plush toys I’ve ever tested. My Jack Russell’s plush toys usually last about a week, but her West Paw toy is still intact and she even plays tug with my big dog. Check out www.westpawdesign.com for more information.
