When deciding on a location for your dog’s bark-day party, it’s important that the space is accommodating. Dogs love room to play, but will also appreciate a time-out from their party pals.
So choose a place that allows you and your dog’s paw pals to run and roughhouse, has ample space for participants to take a party break and relax from the pack, and room to chase balls and play fetch. But most importantly, choose an area that is safe for pets to explore without fear of a dog escaping and leaving the festivities too early without a guardian. If you are having the party in your backyard, make sure the area is fenced-in and away from traffic. PawLux.com is a leading provider of all natural and eco-friendly products for dogs. Place an ad in a local pet publication or on Craigslist to sniff for that perfect doggie playmate. This is a great option if you don’t have a dog park in the area, don’t have neighborhood pups, you live in an apartment, or are just looking for that one special dog as a playmate.
In your ad just specify the type of playmate, playmates and situation you are looking for. Hey, your dog may be what some other dog is looking for! Not a big fan of placing a personal ad for your dog? You can also visit Dogster Forums and connect with other dog lovers and paw pals in your area. Dogs are by their very nature social butterflies and love a good meet, sniff & playtime. By exposing your dog to variety of people, other animals, sights, and sounds at a young age they are less likely to be fearful of new experiences as they grow older. Every dog owner dreams of having a well-rounded fur companion and socializing does just that. Take your dog on car rides to fun places at an early age, so he doesn’t learn to associate a car ride with a trip to the vet!

I would love to hear from others about any truly indestructible dog toys they’ve found because I’ve had very little luck. Of course, I have pit bulls who can destroy a tire in three minutes. The closest I’ve come is Kong, the Almost Indestructible Dog Ball, and the Hurley. The problem is, my dogs aren’t necessarily drawn to these (unless the Kong is filled with peanut butter).
One solution is to buy the cute stuffed toys replete with squeaker and shaped like a moose. Five minutes after giving them to your voracious pup, pick up the squeaker which is now stuck under the bed. Ten minutes later, grab a small trash bag and pick up the stuffing which has an amazing way of getting everywhere. Fifteen minutes later, go in for the kill, telling Fido what a good dog he is as you grab the leftover carcass. Now, refill the carcass and sew if necessary and tomorrow you can go through the same thing. At least it’s something he enjoys. Kelly is a dog columnist and pet writer. We’re not making this up. “Tennis Ball Mouth” is the official term for dogs with a pattern of worn teeth from gnawing on balls and carrying them around in their mouths for hours a day – both of which may cause dental problems. The veterinary jury is still out on how concerned pup parents should be it, but here are a few ideas you can discuss with your vet:
1. Carry the ball to and from the dog park and anytime your dog’s not actively playing with it to reduce the amount of time it’s in his mouth. 2. Supervise your big dog if he chews on balls and inspect the balls afterward for loose bits that can cause choking, or simply leave tennis balls only for fetch. 3. Choose tennis balls just for dogs that are less abrasive on the teeth and come in various sizes. Woof Report is a free weekday email newsletter with pup-perfect dog care tips, news, products & more! Don’t tell anyone, but the dog can write. The furball’s drafting a mushy note right now. If it weren’t for the pesky dewclaw, she’d even hold the pen. Thank goodness for OnePennyPost.com. This ingenious website makes it easy for anyone to create real postcards, postmarked and mailed anywhere in the world. No stamp licking, no photo printing, no paw-writing necessary, and your dog won’t even need to chase down the mailman.
Help your pup send one today for any reason at all. A new fur-do? Puppy class graduation? Your dog can upload her favorite photo and type in a message and she’s set. At just $2.49 each, and free for a limited time when you create an account, sending a real photo postcard fits a pup’s budget. This week we’re exploring ways to have a dog in your life if you don’t have or can’t have a dog of your own. I bet you have family and friends with dogs. (And if you don’t, perhaps step one is to expand your circle of friends!)
Pet sitting or checking on a friend’s dog when they are away would be a nice thing to do and give you some quality time with a dog. Your friend would probably even let you walk their dog now and then or take their pup to the local dog park for a play date. To make sure everything goes well, be sure you stay in line with your friend’s disciplinary philosophy so you don’t confuse Fido or upset your friend. |

Most Americans do not get enough exercise, and that is the same for their dogs. Your four-legged buddy needs exercise too. You may not excel in your own exercise regimen, but you should ensure your dog gets his exercise in. You can get your exercise while you go for a walk with your dog, getting two treats with one act.
If you are unable to go for a walk with your dog every day (a long enough one to call it “exercising”) make sure that your buddy gets exercise in other ways, like playing ball, tug-of-war, or fetching his toys. Allow and encourage other people who have a relationship with your dog to play with him as well. Another great way to get your dog some good exercise, along with some excellent socialization, is to set up play dates with other dogs or make a trip to the nearest dog park. Taking those extra steps can help to keep your dog healthy for years to come. |

If training isn’t fun and interesting for you, then stop and rethink it. Both you and the dog have to be having a good time in order for a positive result to occur. In short, learning takes place in a positive environment. |

When your puppy is chewing on something he shouldn’t and you want to teach him to “leave it,” have a good treat in hand to reward with, and substitute it for the prized object he had in his mouth. You want to always be able to remove anything from his mouth that shouldn’t be there – but as a part of the exercise, let him keep the toy in the end. |
