Choose a costume that’s a little too original and you might have friends asking “What’s he supposed to be?” Rolling your eyes, you answer, “He’s the Dalai Lama, obviously.” Choose a popular costume and you’ll get instantaneous recognition, which can be very gratifying in an obvious way.
While original costumes are your own call, just FYI, it seems 2009’s most popular costumes will be vampires, Michael Jackson, vampires, Hannah Montana, vampires, pirates and, finally, vampires. You just can’t go wrong with vampires this year – and a black cape with red lining pretty much does it. Dogs have fangs and their eyes glow in the headlights. Bingo! Plus, vampires are so hot that you won’t be mocked for making it easy on yourself. Happy Howl-o-ween to all! Helen Fazio and her dog Raja are world travelers. Just as a light stick on a cord makes trick-or-treating children more visible at night, a disposable, inexpensive light stick taped to a dog’s collar, harness or costume makes your dog visible to passing cars as he walks beside you.
The sun will set at roughly 6 p.m. on October 31, 2009. Even though Halloween will coincide with a bright full moon, cloud cover or even tall buildings and trees could make the roadway dark. Protect your costumed doggy by making him glow as he parades about. Helen Fazio and her dog Raja are world travelers. Click here to visit their blog, and click here to follow them on Twitter. |

Why does a dog always go for the toilet bowl water? Pretty gross, but it’s likely that your dog likes the temperature of the water in there. Try placing ice cubes in his water bowl and see how much he digs it! |

The dog days of summer are upon us. When the weather heats up, so do the efforts to keep America’s dogs out of parked cars. Every year, beloved family dogs die waiting in sweltering parked cars for their people to return. And it’s no wonder. The inside of a car heats up very quickly and even more stunning is this result: a cracked car window barely slows the temperature rise at all.
There’s something we all can do to help pup passengers everywhere. Share the free resources from www.MyDogIsCool.com. See how outside temperatures compare with the inside temperatures of an automobile in varying temperature and download “Don’t Leave Me in Here, It’s Hot! Fliers” to have on hand if you spot a doggie in a parked car. Woof Report is a free weekday email newsletter with pup-perfect dog care tips, news, products & more! Dogs are affected by heat as much as we are. They can suffer from dehydration, sunburn and overheating. It’s best to keep them indoors during the hottest part of the day. Always provide plenty of water, inside and out.
Keep in mind that signs of heatstroke include: hard, staggering gait, rapid heartbeat, dazed look, listlessness, restlessness, dark red or purple gums and/or tongue and vomiting. You can gradually lower his body temperature by moving him to the shade or air-conditioning, applying cold packs to his head, neck or belly, or immersing him in cool (not cold) water and giving him small amounts of cool water or ice cubes to lick. Of course, contact your vet if he’s not cooling down. |

Get yourself a Bosun’s Whistle (they’re under $10 online) and train your dog to come when he hears it. Even if your dog is out of the range of your voice, he’ll be able to hear the whistle (which is piercing to us humans) and find his way back to you. Praise him lavishly and give him a treat bonanza so coming back to you is the most fun thing in the world. |

If your dog needs a drink and you don’t have a bowl – but you do have an unused poop bag in your pocket – roll down the top of the bag to form a make-shift bowl and fill it with water. Benny Bix Ochman Labradoodle Puppy prefers this method to every portable dog bowl I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot.) |

This week we’re exploring ways to have a dog in your life if you don’t have or can’t have a dog of your own. I bet you have family and friends with dogs. (And if you don’t, perhaps step one is to expand your circle of friends!)
Pet sitting or checking on a friend’s dog when they are away would be a nice thing to do and give you some quality time with a dog. Your friend would probably even let you walk their dog now and then or take their pup to the local dog park for a play date. To make sure everything goes well, be sure you stay in line with your friend’s disciplinary philosophy so you don’t confuse Fido or upset your friend. |

Dogs make great ice breakers when it comes to (human) dating… People reveal more of themselves when there’s no pressure. Do an activity with your dog and your date where you both can just relax in the conversation and enjoy the moment.
Always speak respectfully to your dog. Berating or speaking down to your dog may be viewed as how you may talk to humans as well. |
