7 Things You Need to Know About Antifreeze

Working at Dogster is like being one of the people who runs the dog park - the hilarious times are many and the lessons learned are valuable. But sadly enough, it's not always just fun and games. Those days do roll around when you show up and one of the dog park regulars is not there.

Last week, there wasn't just one dog who didn't show up to play. There were three. Dogster dogs Jake, Joey, and Nari had to be put to sleep last week, after having ingested antifreeze.

It is said that antifreeze is responsible for the poisoning of over 10,000 dogs and cats every year. The toxic ingredient to blame is ethylene glycol, a substance that is found not only in antifreeze, but in radiator coolant, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid, and other automotive liquids. Its sweet-smelling and tasting properties make it attractive to pets, and it doesn't take much to cause damage. One to two teaspoons can poison a cat, three tablespoons can kill a medium-sized dog.

Because it's a substance that is readily available at auto supply stores and is used in nearly every motor vehicle on the road, it's important that pet owners know a few things about antifreeze and its effect on small animals. Here are seven things that you should be aware of:

  • Symptoms vary, depending on how long it has been since the dog drank the antifreeze. They will also depend on how much of the poison they drank.
  • Initial symptoms mirror those of intoxication.
  • The ethylene glycol can cause an irritating effect on a dog's stomach, which may cause vomiting.
  • Dogs will urinate and drink excessively. They may be depressed and exhibit signs of poor balance.
  • Dogs drink more because the thirst centers of the brain are stimulated in response to the poison ingestion.
  • While some dogs may appear to look and feel better 12 hours later, it is only because the liver and kidneys are working to metabolize the ethylene glycol. It is common, however, that symptoms return in 24 hours, and are much worse. Things to look for are dehydration, weakness, depression, diarrhea, rapid breathing, mouth ulcers and seizures.
  • If you are certain that your dog has consumed antifreeze, you should attempt to induce vomiting and get him or her to a medical professional immediately.

A tribute to these dogs and additional information about antifreeze poisoning can be found over on the For the Love of Dog Blog. And feel free to stop by Jake's, Joey's, and Nari's profile pages to leave a message.

Take special care and make extra sure that your poisonous household and automotive substances are inaccessible to any of your little furry friends. We want every dog to stick around as long as is caninely possible.

Our new puppy who we had rescued from the HUmane Society 3 days earlier drank about 4 laps of anti freeze in our garage. Fortunatly for us my husband was there at the time and was able to get her to the vet. She went thru a lot, she was made to vomit, she was given charcoal to absorb the antifreeze and then several doses of a medicine. 3 days and $1100.00 later she came home. We were very fortunate to be able to save her.
I am so very sad for your lose and especially of three in the same family.

    This is horrible.
Also, check out other household items a lot of them contain ethylene glycol. Like your moisturizers and face washes, body washes, lotions, etc. This will kill your animals and you are putting it on your skin! Check your dog shampoos as well. All kinds of harmful things are lurking there.

I am so sorry these dogs had to die this way, but we need to get the word out…please please please keep your antifreeze where the animals can’t get to it. I had a cat die this way and it isn’t a pleasant death. Dear God, take the souls of these three beautiful furbabies into Your arms and surrounded by Your love and let them know there is no more pain, no more grief, only love and acceptance. In Your Name we pray, Amen

I am so sorry to hear about this! I think we should all take the time to write to antifreeze companies and demand that they manufacture pet safe products. The American Journal of Emergency Medicine estimates more than 700 children under the age of six, and nearly 10,000 dogs and cats were exposed to antifreeze’s poisonous ingredients. Adding a bittering agent like denatonium benzoate — one of the bitterest substances available and is now used safely in many other household products — will increase the cost of antifreeze by only two cents per gallon. It’s a small price to pay for the safety of children and pets.

  31. Michelle Salyers posted a comment on June 2nd, 2009 at 4:04 pm

This is so terribly sad. Coincidentally, four of my dogs were hospitalized Friday through Sunday for suspected ingestion of antifreeze. We are extremely diligent here, no antifreeze, pesticides, window washer fluid, etc. in or around the home.

We had a load of gravel delivered last week, for a dog run area we are installing outside of our “dog room” (with doggy door access). I looked outside Friday morning to see two of my dogs with a black jug in their mouths. I ran outside and when I saw what it was, my heart stopped and I was weak in the knees.

Rushed four to the hospital for preventative care, just in case they had ingested enough to harm them. Had I not looked outside at that moment, chances are I would not have known. We have seven acres, and I would not have seen the container otherwise, I am sure.

Turns out it had been “tossed” in the back of the dump truck that delivered the gravel. The driver had forgotten about it, filled the bed with the gravel, and it must have been dumped along with the gravel. The dogs dug it up, and the rest is history.

My heart goes out to this family….I know what I felt just knowing there was a chance that one or more of my dogs would not be coming home from the hospital. I cannot imagine what they must be going through.

Hugs to all…we care about you and feel for you.

Absolutely tragic I completely understand how that feels, just before my sixteenth Birthday my yorkshire terrier Missy licked up anti freeze that was spilt in our yard, she died of a heart attack she is the first dog in Ontario to live three months of anti freeze in her system, she was a tough one. The vet kept sending us home until finally we found out it was anti freeze we would have never thought cause we dont have chemicals at the house. Missy was 9 years old you can read her story here: http://humane-heart.tripod.com/MissyArtz.html My heart goes out to the family, you have long road and I am so sorry, my heart is broken for you, to lose three at ounce its just overwhelming, you are in my deepest prayers!

How very sad for this family – my heart goes out to them. We should all take heed and look for antifreeze – and other coolant products – made with propylene glycol which is significantly less toxic to pets, children and the environment. (NOT non-toxic, however.) The cost is slightly higher, but the benefits are obvious.

I hope, if this was foul play, that the person is caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Our “furry” kids are just as important to us as our human families. They love us no matter what and are always excited to see us even when we have had a bad day. No animal deserves to be mistreated.

Our little Patches (a rat terrier) ingested antifreeze and after 72 hours of treatment we had to make the very hard decision to let her go. To this day we still don’t know how/where she got the antifreeze. I have two wonderful rat terriers now, Nikki and Skye and you can best bet that I watch them like a hawk especially keeping them out of the garage. We will never forget our Patches as I know you will never forget your three beautiful babies. My God give you the strength to get through this ordeal.

God Bless your beautiful dogs. I am so so sorry for your lost. I lost my siberian husky last year to a terrible seizure and he was playing and acting ok, and we are not sure why he got so sick and had a seizure and pass away in dec. We to this day still miss him and I cannot let go. I think about him all the time that I even felt him jump on my bed. He used to sleep with me all the time and I felt him the other night. But, I know he is ok. And, your sweet pups will be ok too. They are all in Rainbow Heaven playing and when we leave this World you will stop there and pick all your babies up and go up that beautiful stairway to heaven. Again, I am so sorry for your lost. Your doggies were so beautiful! God Bless you too and give you and your family strength.

We are soooooooo sorry to hear of this. I thought that I had read before that it was thought that one of the neighbors did this on purpose. Did anything come of that? Do they know who it is? Why hasn’t it been made a law that a bittering agent is put into anti-freeze? In addition to the animals being posioned I have heard so many stories of people poisioning other people by adding it into foods and drinks. Does anyone know who we can write to to try and get this made into a law?

I lost a dog 10 or 11 years ago that had ingested meat or bread soaked in antifreeze. Two of my dogs were in the yard when someone tossed it in the yard. One dog got it. I wasn’t home so I dind’t know what happened. I thought she ate some grass and was just tossing her cookies. Long story short, didn’t take her to the Vet for a little over 24 hours. Had I taken her earlier, there is an antidote that they can use to reverse the horrible horrible effects. The kidneys shut down. I had to put her to sleep too. The Vet did an autopsy and it was definitely antifreeze.

The void left by fur kids or human kids is very dark and painful. Knowing they have gone home to the Creator, brings comfort over time. Trying to make sense of the loses takes much energy and also time. I have lost two of my human kids and many of my animal companions. Nothing hurts like almost hearing their feet of the floor, a special sound they made or almost catching sight of them in the regular places. When its time/ you will know when new loves are to enter your life. New risks of giving part of your heart away need to happen…until then, you have my prayers for you and yours.

I feel sorry for the 3 dogs. They’ve paid the price for the lack of attention from their human family.
WAKE UP, PEOPLE!!! DOGS ARE LIKE BABIES AND YOU MUST BABY-PROOF YOUR HOUSE.
I have 2 dogs and I had a lot (and I mean A LOT) of work to baby-proof my house, but at lease they are safe here. And they have no access at all to the garage, laundry or cleaning supplies. All that stuff is totally out of their reach.
So, USE YOUR BRAIN and common sense. Be attentive to dangerous situations!!
I hope that this family at least have learned a lesson (unfortunately…the hard way).

I am very sorry for your loss. I am also wondering how did all 3 of your dogs ingest antifreeze? You see ads and commercials every year about the dangers, and yet many still die. The bottles that the chemical comes in has warnings, and yet here we are reading about this tragedy. Please, Please, everyone, take care at what your children and pets can get to , lock it up, use safer products, (yes there is non-toxic antifreeze/coolant avalible), wipe it up immediatly if it drips, or leaks out, and don’t allow your children and pets anywhere there is a risk, ever.

Besides automotive products, be aware that ethylene glycol is an additive in many dry dog foods. I didn’t know this till a patron in Pet Smart in Warrenton pointed that out. Good thing we started visiting and he knew about this practice. To prove it, he pulled at random some dog food off the shelf in the Natural products section. There was ethylene glycol clearly listed as an ingredient. We have to be so vigilant.

My son lost his dog last July from antifreeze poisoning. It doesn’t rain much in our high desert climate but when it does it washes everything out of the yards, off of driveways and down the street.

We think Petershooter drank some water in a pothole that formed in the yard and it had probably been contaminated by antifreeze washed off of someone’s driveway. No way to really know for sure.

We were so very sad but it made us more aware of where our dogs play and the water they like to splash in while out on walks.

Good thoughts of the wonderful times spent with your beloved pets!

I think I’ve even seen tv shows where people have used this to sweeten tea and kill people! There are so many other outrages out there, why isn’t this one of them???

It should probably be mentioned that your best chance of
saving a dog that has ingested antifreeze, is while he or she is still in that drunken state. Because after that, you are not going to know anything is wrong until it’s most probably to late.

My heart really goes out to these unfortunate dogs, and the families they left behind.

I am so sorry for the loss. I know that every day this happends to someone but they never knew what the dog or cat has drank. PLEASE to everyone,, keep a very good 80 or higher proof bottle of some type of alcohol around the house where you can get it in a hurry. You can add flavorings to the bottle (in most cases it will mix) so your pet will not be so repulsed by the taste. This can save the life of your pet !!!! If you see or even think that your pet has been into ethylene make them drink some of the alcohol you have on hand right away. Go with the size of your dog, small dogs 20 lbs or so, 30 to 60 cc’s 100 pound dog I would go with at least 8 oz’s Than get to your vet right away. Tell him or her what you have given your pet so this will help with what further treatment might be needed. This will save the pets life if you know when the poisoning by the ethylene happened. You need to act right away for this to work, if you are unsure or it has been hours, this will not help, but right away it will. It will bind and the ethlene than cannot.

I am keeping you in my prayers, that God will comfort you in your sorrow. I truly believe that dogs are love on legs, they are more than mere animals to those who love them. Losing them is just as painful as the loss of our human loved ones. Grief does not discriminate. God bless you.

It has been many many years since I lost Brandy our little mixed dog to poison, a neighbor had been feeding her table scarps while mixing rat poison. The vet tried but couldn’t save her. She was also put to sleep. The only humane thing to do and not let her suffer.
My heart goes out to you and I will keep you and lost furry guys in my thoughts and prayers. It breaks my heart to know that you have lost not one but your three buddies.

Im so sorry for your loss. I know first hand the devastation that anti-freeze poisoning brings. When My puppy Jinx was 8 weeks old she ingested anti freeze in the back lane..I was lucky enough to see her acting strangely and rushed her in to the vet… A few days and almost $800 later, she was home. It was touch and go and they wernt sure she would make it, but shes a fighter who just turned 7 years old…

  193. Sheryl Castaing posted a comment on June 3rd, 2009 at 9:35 am

Jake, Joey and Nari will always live in your memories I promise you that. My Hunter has been at the Rainbow Bridge for 10 years now and he still helps me every day. Whenever you are having a bad day, think to yourself, would Nari want me to feel like this?

With a little time, perhaps you’ll want another dog (or more). Remember that Jake, Joey and Nari will try to help guide you with that process. Let them help you. Sometimes you don’t realize they are “there”, but they are. There have been times that I’ve thought I saw or heard Hunter, but of course he’s not “there”. At the same time, he is “there”. They will leave you signs that they are thinking of you and want you to be well. As with my boy, Hunter, perhaps you’ll feel them brush up against you. Jake, Joey and Nari will always love their Mom and will be waiting and watching over you till the day comes (NOT SOON) for you to cross over the bridge.

Take your time grieving! And don’t listen to anyone who tells you to “get over it” – they don’t understand. Instead you will “learn to live with it”.

Also, if you do find out who did this, prosecute. They should not get away with murder.

My heart goes out to you,

    Sheryl

I can understand your loss-I had to put my nine year old tom cat, Solomon, to sleep on April 14th; in his case, his problem was kidney failure agrivated by old age. He was my special buddy and friend.
We watched our beloved Keshond, Shadow, die of what we think was cancer three years ago in February 2006. At the time we couldn’t afford the money to put her to sleep.
You did all you could to help and protect your furry kids. What you are going through, the pain, the what ifs, the second guessing and all will be with you for a while, BUT this too shall pass. You will never forget all your happy times together, the silly times, just as you will never forget their last times with you.
Right now we have a “new” puppy [he joined us when he was eight weeks old] that will be turning two, June 24th, praise be! Hunter is our golded retriever furbaby. I know that there are some special furbabies out there that need you and your family–please be open hearted enough to recognise them.

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. It is really hard to lose one dog least to say three.
Maybe we all ought to petition for the antifreeze manufacturers to add some kind of chemical to their product which will prevent pets from wanting to consume them. Such as bleach smell and bad taste can help not only pets but also children to stay away from the product.
Once again, I am so sorry for your loss.

He would throw out chicken and when the dog that found it ate it that was 1 down . I found out all this after the man died so i hope he is in hell and being chased and bitten by mad dogs for ever. I’m sorry, but anti-freeze did not kill these dogs, any more than cars kill dogs, rabies kills dogs, etc., etc.; it is inattentive owners that kill dogs – a properly housed and attended dog does not have access to anti-freeze!

I felt your pain when my dog Elderberry died from cancer. I felt your pain when my cat Nightshade died from a stroke due to saddle thromboids.

At the time I asked “Why does God allow such evil and pain?” The answer that was given was “For greater grace.” It didn’t make sense at first, I am still making sense of it 30 odd years later. It is a growing process.

If you are feeling like I felt, maybe I can help. It will never take the pain away, but your dogs tragic deaths gave something of value to all dogs who play here at Dogster.

I do not wish death to any pet, nor do I wish it to be so painful and tragic. I believe that everything is interconnected. Had this horrible thing not happened to your loving companions this article about the dangers of Antifreeze would not be on the “front page” of this e-mail I’ve read this morning.

Dog owners would have to look for this information more deeply placed in Dogster’s web pages. The greater grace is your dogs didn’t die in vain. Their deaths has saved the lives of thousands of dogs. Their passing put this article front and center for all to read.

I can certainly feel yr pain & loss. About 4 yrs ago I just moved in my Fience’ and he had 2 dogs and I one. It was in the winter and all 3 dogs got out one night and we finally got them 3 hrs later. the next day all 3 had the same symptoms, and I figured it was the flu or something. I told my fience if they weren’t better when I got home from work we would take them to the vet. But But my dog being the smallest passed away first hearing the news @ work and by the time we got the other 2 to the vet they had to be put down. My heartfelt prayers go out to you it was a great loss from the same thing you are experiencing.so sorry:(

To Barry and others…please be kind! These dogs did not get into antifreeze due to an inattentive owner. Someone intentionally poisoned them while they were in their yard. Please refrain from accusation until you know the entire story.

Joey, Jake, and Nari, you and your mom are in my prayers. I know it doesn’t seem so right now, but eventually the pain of losing your dear friends will lessen. The good thing is that the love never dies…it goes on forever, and will warm your heart always. Hugs to you.

A post made by Annie much prior to mine was totally uncalled for and completely heartless. These babies passed on and their family is torn over it. I think you lack compassion and sympathy by even posting that at this time. This IS NOT in the spirit of Dogster and I myself have shed a billion tears over this whole ordeal even not knowing them personally. I will pray that your hateful remarks don’t come back on you via your pups. Karma is a powerful thing.

Jasmine you are in my prayers and you were a great mom to all Joey, Jake & Nari.

We are all so sorry for your loss. Losing one family member is heartbreaking enough but to lose three would send me to my grave. Be strong and remember the good times. I know you have been told that hundreds of times already and sometimes it seems hard to think of the good when all you want is to have them back… We are all your friends here on Dogster and hope you know that you have our support through this incredibly hard time.
And no matter what anybody may say about the situation, just remember that accidents happen. Please don’t blame yourself or let anyone else either.
Our thoughts are with you. Take care.

Our prayers are with you on your loss. It is not only domestic animals that antifreeze is poisioness to, but it can affect any animal, bird or human. I live in Big Bear Lake, CA and was working for the Forest Service at the Discovery Center when one of our residents brought in the body of a young female mountain lion. This beautiful creature had antifreeze coming from it’s mouth and running down it’s chest. We have had a drought in the higher elevations and the larger animals, mountain lions, bears, deer, etc., will come down to the lower elevations searching for something to drink. They can drink from the lake and a few of the running streams, but they try to stay away from any human contact. She must have found the antifreeze that someone had carelessly discarded near one of the many outlying cabins. Please be aware of this danger to animals, birds and children and dispose of it properly.

My heart aches for you, I am so sorry. Somebody once told me that animals would know, that they would sense that something was poisen, and I never fully believed that and I hope nobody else does either. Automotive liquids are toxic, and they kill! I am so– sorry for your loss. Melissa Hartman

I am horrified!!! I am so terribly sorry for your loss…They were just beautiful doggies…I will say many prayers for you and for them. I am sending you this poem to help to ease your pain. It helped me when I had to lay my 16 year dog away just a couple of weeks ago…Maybe it will do the same for you

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or mained are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from you heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together

    Author unknown…..

My GOD be with you….GOD BLESS

I read your article on antifreeze and I just had to add my story…my dog Axl and his friend Tasha were DELIBERATELY poisoned with antifreeze last spring by someone in my neighbourhood. They meant to kill him, she was an unfortunate victim. There had been two other attempts but we have no idea why. He was not a vicious dog. The police were absolutlely useless and uncaring. My point is this: evil people are aware that antifreeze is a very easy way to kill animals. And they are well aware that it’s easy to get away with murder. If you have neighbours that are not animal f riendly and have possibly lodged irrational complaints agiaint you, you need to be very aware. Check your yard regularly for unusual trash, food, etc. The antifreeze that killed my dear dog was soaked into some kind of breadcrumb balls. Hard to resist, for sure. Circumstances led to me think that Axl was just not acting like himself because of ingesting some pondwater or the new food. I waited too long to act
and now I regret it every day. I urge people to trust their instincts and know their dogs normal behaviours…if anything changes, a trip to vet and a few quick tests will tell you right away if it’s likely antifreeze. If you act fast, you could save your dog’s life with dialysis.

I now have a rescue dog , Leela, a chocolate lab and I love her so so much and she has helped me a lot but I can never replace Axl and Tasha.

I have lost another one of my pup pals on Tuesday to poisioning, why are humans so cruel. I hope that they all get caught and punished. We need to change the laws were they get a really long time in jail. I did know Nari but not so much the other two. My prayers and heart goes out to all the pup’s that have lost a sisfur or brofur this way.

If I had been told she had not made it I do not know what had done. I am only eleven so Jazz has always been like a big sis to me . I tell my dogs Buckie and Peeckie in my prays to welcome your three little kids and give them a bone to chew.
