Take 5 with HQ – Our Pup Staycation Tips!
Have no fear! This is not a bad thing, my furry friends - it's a chance to once again focus on the little things we really love about our pets and thoroughly enjoy the friendship, fun and comfort that our best friends provide.
So we sat down today at Dogster HQ and came up with five simple things that you can do for your dog this summer when you both feel like it's time for a little break. And the best thing about all five is the price tag: FREE! Here's our list:
#1. Brush it out. Not only do most dogs enjoy being brushed, but they of course need it as well. Getting out tangles in long-haired dogs will please the both of you, while short-haired dogs benefit from the massage and cleaning aspects that a good brushing provides. Brushing can also prove to be therapeutic for you as well. The rhythmic motions and the soothing nature of the actions can prove to be just the kind of relaxing break you deserve.
#2. Be a visitor. Why not take your dog to a place where people can't or don't own dogs? There's nothing more satisfying than seeing senior citizens or hospitalized individuals light up at the sight of a dog. Studies have shown, as well, that the therapeutic benefits of canine contact are many, so while your dog has fun meeting new people and the new people enjoy petting your dog, you will feel great about lending a helping hand.
#3. Take a nap! Let's face it - how often have you looked over at your pooch, sleeping on the couch or curled up under a tree and thought, "Oh, how I wish I was doing that right now..." ? Well, what are you waiting for? Curling up next to your dog on the sofa or (if he or she is allowed) on the bed, is something that both of you will benefit from. Your dog will appreciate your proximity and you will love the time-out. And don't forget - dogs are pretty darned good at sleeping - you could learn a few things from yours!
#4. Make a play date. Don't just play with your dog... PLAY with your dog! Set aside an uninterrupted time when you can really get down, get dirty and play with your dog. Tossing a ball and walking around the block are also great activities, but your dog will love it if you get down on your hands and knees so that you can really have fun with each other. Being down on your dog's level will not only reinforce your friendly relationship, but it will remind you of what it's actually like to be down there all the time! If you can't get down on your dog's level, find a neighborhood kid or a nearby family member who can. Your dog will thank you for it!
#5. Park it. Even if this is something that you already are in the habit of doing, it's worth bringing up and worth trying to do even more of this summer. The bottom line on this one is: dogs LOVE parks. It's great to get out to a place where the sights and smells are new and exciting, and a dog can run his or her little heart out. If you live in the country, you LIVE in a park, of course, so this is just a reminder to get out there and have fun!
#6. Shut it down. Hey wait a minute... you said FIVE things! Well, #6 is not technically on the list, but the five things above aren't possible unless you start with #6... Turn off the PC, power down the laptop, walk slowly (but surely) away from the Mac. Believe me, this is gonna hurt us more than it does you... ;-) As much as we love the Internets, and as much as we love Dogster, AND as much as we know that you do, too - getting a little one-on-one time with your BFF is best accomplished offline.
So take a break right now and do one of the five things listed above.

Must…get…off..oh no the forces!! xD Have a great day all! 8]
What about a good old-fashioned walk? 99% of dogs surveyed said they would rather take their humans for a walk than perform any other activity.
#2 – Be a Visitor: It’s a great suggestion, but most hospitals, etc., require that “Therapy Dogs” are certified as Canine Good Citizens. So, it may not be that easy to just walk into a hospital to cheer up the sick folks!
Take them to the park first, so they run and smell their liitle furry tails off.
then take them for a very long walk does the trick for my two kids.
Take a dip! Go to a local beach (that allows dogs) and take a swim with your dog. Grab a tennis ball or a stick and cool off together, ask other freinds with dogs to join you. Its a great muscle building tool for your dogs as well, and will tire both of you out.
A walk is always great but how about a walk just for your dog, one that lets them sniff every single smell and not one that rushes to get back. Or how about giving your pet a warm hug and whisper loving thoughts to him/her, my dogs love this.
About the visiting. I visit a family friend in a nursing home with my human. All the nursing home required was proof of my vacinations. When we go to visit, everyone parked in wheel chairs in the lobby and hall get to give me a treat. Everypaw wins.
I make a point of inviting people over who loves dogs, mine in particular. Small groups are better, say, 2 new people. Thor play soccer in the yard, smells new people, gets lots of attention, and his training is helped when more people ‘do the same things’ as I do. Visitors are good for our dog this summer…
I sometimes take my dog up to the local hostel & most of the residents love it, They do have a cat that lives at the hostel, it’s great to see the faces light up, when my dog arrives.I also go to visit them during the week and if I haven’t got the dog, they ask when I will be bringing her up, plus the cat also looks forward to seeing the dog.
Purchase a little kiddie pool around 60″ in dia. … only about $20 … it provides hours of fun for the water loving dogs .. and a giant water bowl for those that aren’t keen on wading!! My dog and foster dogs love it.
We love to walk with our doggie friends in the neighborhood. There are always neighbors who talk to us and pet us.
I’d like to see a world wide scheduled Number 6. It would be good for the environment, ourselves, and our friends.
We really love #6!!
Thanks! These were all great comments, especially #6. If I did that more, I wouldn’t have to be reminded of numbers 1-5. ;o)
Thanks for the tips. I’ll be sure to use them this summer when I am home with my dog.
Visit your friends and family. (Be sure to tell them first.) Many of my family only see my Muttly when I bring her over to visit. She loves playing with her friends at thier homes. By the time we get home we are ready to enjoy number 3 together!
How about taking your dog skinny dipping? If you have access to a private pond, lake or stream, this is loads of fun!!!
Well after all she is my best friend so I thought, why not take her when I go visiting to friends? Especially in Summer when we hang out side!
Friends were having a BBQ, & I thought, at least I’m gonna try it! I brushed her out real good and gave her a bird bath first. And Holly was a really good girl. She made me proud! She stuck right near me and sat or laid down on her banket I brought.
I could read her mind! She was thinking “WOW I’m gonna be good cuz I LOVE hangin with mom!” LOL
I had way more fun having her with me. I wasn’t thinking I had to hurry and get home. I’m gonna keep it up as long as it works.
My pup loves to go to the Autism walk every summer. We just went to our second walk last weekend. The kids LOVE her, and she LOVES the fact that the kids love her…
Naps in the summertime with your dog(s) are the BEST. They really DO know how to sleep – and snore. Napping with my three dogs on a cool summer day with the windows open and the dogs all positioned in their respective places – which they somehow choose on their own – with my two golden retrievers stretched out as long as I am tall, and the corgi on her back with her little feet sticking straight up in the air – is the MOST peaceful time I know. And these days, peacefulness is RARE in my life. Thanks for the reminder!
How about dog training!!!! I’ve done it for 15 years and it is only super expensive if you are training multiple dogs for competition. Take your dog to your local training club and get involved! You’ll be amazed at how much YOU learn and it’s fun to show in obedience trials as well. Purebreds and mixed breeds can both show in AKC and UKC obedience trials now!
Definetely love the pool idea had never thought of that for the girls, we are however taking the gilrs this weekend they are registered in WALK FUR A HOMe to help homeless animals, they are then after the walk having a pet expo, hide and seek kong game, look alike pet contest, doggy massage and pet photos, me and my daughter are very excited about getting the girls out and doing this and it is for a very good cause… wish there was more pet events to participate in though…
I agree with the training suggestion! Teach your dog a fun new trick using reward based methods. You will both have fun, increase your bond and increase your communication vocabulary of hand signals or cues! There are plenty of website to teach you how to train basic manners too. That way your dog is well behaved and can join you in more places (and is easier to live with too!)
I am constantly thinking of new places that Ted-e and Luv-e would like to go. New places are as fun for them as they are for me. I always feel bad for the dog that only gets to go round and round in the same neighborhood where he lives.
Bailey also has a doggie aka kiddie pool , that she loves splashing around in , she’s been doing it since she was a puppy . She also loves helping me in the garden. A trip to the local pet store just to sniff around is always fun too and air conditioned.
we have corgis and we try to get them in weekly agility classes during the summer. They love it. We also take them to the baseball games. Most major league teams set aside a game each summer where you can bring your dog with you. It’s a lot of fun for everyone that attends. You usually get really great free stuff for your dog.
What about starting off the day with a good belly rub? I’m not allowed out of bed til the girls get their day started right. Thank goodness they’re all small dogs as all 3 sleep with me and know when it’s wake-up time!
All of the things that have been said are really good, but I think we should all try to spend MORE time with our guys in the summer. It matters less what you do with them than that you are with them…..makes their day.
If you live near a beach, pack you dog up in his seat belt, drive down to the beach with a few floating toys if you dog likes to swim and fetch, and go for a long walk and play with you pup or pups! We have three larger dogs and do this almost every weekend, when we can. Don’t forget to pack a picnic for yourself to make it an extra specail day! Also don’t forget water for your dog, especailly if you’re going to salty water.
I take my dogs to visit my elderly shut-in neighbors. They live in a housing project where pets are not permitted, but we are allowed to visit for short periods. My neighbors love to see whichever dog is visiting that day (I only take one dog at a time). I also make stops along our walking route to have my giant cockapoo do tricks for the neighborhood children. This is also helping with his socialization training because he is learning to greet the children calmly and they are learning how to pet dogs appropriately. This way, we all win.
We have a 4th of July BBQ and all dogs are invited. Also, just any dog-welcome get together lets our dogs have fun with new and old friends, and we always have a great time with friends ourselves.
Great suggestions. I’ve recently become aware of how much my computer time is gobbling up the hours I’m at home, time I could/should maybe be spending more with my dogs.
(I also take my border collies to an assisted living facility, everyone loves seeing them and they seem to enjoy the attention.)
Fill a kiddie pool with water for your pal (you can kick your shoes off too and splash around with him…) to play in.
Hook the hose up to a sprinkler….
OK OK all this provided you have a dog who loves water.
turn off the computer…OK….
I’M TRYING TO .OH THE BLACK HOLE IS SUCKING ME BACK
OH DEAR WHAT TO DO…..
it costs a little money but I got a basket for my dog to go on my bike for her to ride in ( if your dog is bigger you might want to try a child’s bike trailer), and Angel loves it! It is good exercise for me and mommy time for her. we ride and let the breeze cool us down. I look for excuses to ride my bike so she can ride too, then we can just stop at the park and she can just be a dog. And I save money on gas by going to the park on the bike, that’s a plus!
We make ice cubes with treats or meat juice and they love them, they chase them and throw them up in the air. They love them!
What, doesn’t anyone like to get a good scrubbin’ bath outside on a hot day in the summer? We sleep so good that night!
Check with your local Humane Society, mine has a visiting pet program. And all you have to do is have your dog pass a few simple tests to see if she is ok with wheel chairs, walkers or people touching them.. And they are good to go. My dog and I do it and we love it and so do the residents at the homes…
i love dogs. i will try all of these:)
Trooper loves to go for ice cream after dinner, so she packs us in the car and away we go – she makes sure that she gets the doggie ice cream. She also loves to have the neighbors over for burgers on the grill – her best friend, Deeo and she have their own private table where they can slobber over their burger. Happy Summer!
my baby a pekingnese loves to go boating and fishing.we take along a spray bottle with water to keep her cool.Isabelle loves when mom or dad brings in a fish. She enjoyed seeing the ducks on the river. She sleeps in the bed with us and the best cuddler of all.
We take our dogs atleast once a week to the lake and they run and play and swim. Every night I take our female for a walk. We are the only girls in the family and we deserve alittle time away from the boys! She loves it! It doesn’t take much to please our pets so why not get out there and play and get them the exercise they need.
My yellow lab loves to go on long hikes and swim in the lake near our home in the mountains.
WHY ARE POEPLE THAT GET ANY KIND OF PET NOT HAVE HOME VIST TO CHACK OUT BOFORE GETTING TO TAKE AN ANAMALE HOME AND THERE WOULD NOT BE SO MENY STRASS EVERY WHERE
I’ve created “Mommy Time” with my 2 dachshunds. While my coffee is perking in the morning, they receive fresh water and food. Afterwards we all snuggle on the couch for at least half an hour. That way, no matter how busy the rest of your day is, you’ve taken “time out”.
Shy would like me to tell you that he and his sister have been enjoying Puppy Popsicles. They think the Frosty Paws are great now and then but for everyday treats that help cool them down, homemade puppy popsicles are a fav=) We just use no sodium chicken or beef stock, organic or homemade if possible and a good old fashioned ice cube tray. They keep nicely in a ziplock in the freezer. Quick, easy, and cheap and oh, so appreciated on those hot afternoons. For extra fun, float a couple in the wading pool =) Shy and Riley wish you all a safe and happy summer =)
5 things I like to do in the summer with my pet:
1. Attend a free outdoor concert (our town sponsors concerts in the summer, and we also go to to the USMA at West Point to attend Army Band concerts)– pack a blanket and some snacks and sit back and enjoy the music!
2. Long walks- summer heat can be hard on our dog’s paws so we go in the early morning or late evening. We are sure to bring plenty of water (for us, and our dog). Our favorite place: The Piermont Pier (in Piermont NY)
3. A day of beauty: At least once during the summer I drop my long haired dachshund off at the groomer. Then I head off to my own hair dresser. After, we take a long walk around town to “show off” how cute we look.
4. Swimming– we both enjoy a splash in our backyard pool. I bought an inflatable raft which our dog seems to enjoy floating around on!
5. Play dates- we joined a “Meet-up” group which gives us and our pooch an opportunity to socialize.
I live 5 minutes from the lake and have not been brave enough to take my new kayak to the lake. But I have just recently purchased a life jacket for my Lab, Jack. I am sure it will be hysterical to watch but together I think we will get the hang of it.
I buy a hard plastic swimming pool every summer and several rubber balls. The kind with the hole and the bell in them, so they sink in the water. I have four dogs, two of witch will play fetch in a couple inches of water in the pool for DAYS! I sit on the porch, they keep finding them and bringing them back to me and I just throw them back in the pool. Well, most of the time i throw them back “in the pool” They don’t mind chasing them through the yard either! A good tip though, empty the water each time. Keeps them clean and keeps mesgitos away.
My sweet Molly loves to go “shopping” at PetCo or Pet Smart or any dog friendly store. She could snuffle around the store for hours looking at all the different sites and sniffing all the smells. She even stands up and looks at the ferrets, fish and birds! It is really a special treat for her!
Every Sunday, I load up the pups in the truck and take them shopping at the doggie store. They love the ride and the shopping!!!
I am starting doggie agility with my dog, Bandit, this summer.
make a play date for you pal with another dog, my pomeranian Mack, loves to go over to my daughter’s and play with her jack russell terrier Rusty they are about the same sizes and they run and play for hours.
We make play dates atleast twice a month
My little girl absolutely LOVES the kiddie pool I bought her. It is a rectangular one, only cost about $20. She has spent hours and hours having a great time and I also love sitting in the pool as well. It gets me a great tan and I love seeing her have so much fun. She would swim all day if she could!
Camping in the Summer is always fun. You get to incorporate #’s 1 – 6. Our boy, Hunter, always ended up getting “campin headed” (so sleepy you can’t keep your eyes open and your head up), because he didn’t want to miss a thing.
When traveling with your dog in a vehicle, keep a leash on the pet just in case of an accident. It makes it easier to catch a frightned dog.
I’m a little dog and I’m half pug, so mom and I have joined 3 different pug-meet groups. We get together often and usually meet at local dogparks. This week we’re having a doggie cookout, at my house. LuvGiz and Mom Kathy
Ling Ling loves her huge backyard, with its sheltering trees, high protective fence, and large water dish. She runs laps around her yard carrying one of her beloved toys, head and tail high, as proud as can be. Oreo is not quite so comfortable in it, but is learning to enjoy it just from chasing after Ling Ling. They get grand exercise, especially when we throw their toys for them – that is more fun than anything.
How about “Take A Dog to Lunch”?? I love the summer because here in CA there are so many dog friendly restaurants that not only allow your dog but cater to his needs…special meals, special bowls…it can be LOTS of fun!!!! Go online and do a search for dog friendly restaurants in your area!!
Our town has a beautiful dog park where our dogs can socialize with other pets. We can also socialize with other owners; it’s a great place to get to know your neighbors.
Another idea…Baseball games!!! Our local Minor league baseball team…the 66′rs… have dog nights on Wednesday night home games. You pay $1.00 extra for your pooch which sports him a new 66′rs bandana to wear for the games and a lovely grassy knoll to watch the game and get to meet other pups and their owners. Check out your local team for info….nothing like summer, baseball and spending time with our dogs!!!
My owner likes to take me to the local boat landings. There are lots of trails to explore. I love all the different smells and meeting new people. I hope all my furry friends have a terrific summer!
i am a little dog and i like to lay on my back and have my owner brush my belly so tell ur owners to brush ur belly
Hi! Happy Summer time! My Mom and I love agitlity soooo much that Dad bought us our own equipment. Mom sets it up in the backyard, or even the house and I jump, go through the tire, go through the tunnel or go through the weave poles. I am loaning my stuff to my niece Sobie, because she had surgery and can’t go to the dog park right now and she needs something fun to do but as soon as I get it back I’m gonna run and have FUN!
My dogs love to go to Wisconsin for boat rides. Well Cooper does Toby doesn’t but they love to swim in the lake with my brothers dogs.My sisters dog Peter who is a puppy so it will be his 1st year.
If you live or will be visiting Nashville, TN, bring your dogs to my shaved-ice stand, The Snowball Stand in Hillsboro Village.
I have Bow Wow Bowls on the menu. A bowl of shaved ice just for dogs! They get hot and like a cool treat as much as we do!
Some one on here suggested taking dogs to a park to blow off energy then take them for a walk. Well it is acutally the opposite. It is better to take the dog for a walk before the park. They need to walk off energy before the park so they will be a good citizen at the park and not want to be a high strung dog where there are other dogs and people. We all know what it is like to be at the park and our dog is calm then have a hyper dog come along and go nuts because of all pent up energy. If your dog is trying to play to rough or run to much you never know how another dog may re-act to this, could be a fight in the making. Also it tends to feak out non-dog loving people a bit to much to have a little or worse a huge maniac run a muck around them. And it is just wrong to have your dog so worked up at a park where there are other dogs and people that may just be looking for a relaxing day at the park.
So please take them for a walk prior to the park,
.
Great Ideas …
My dogs love trips to her grandparents house. One live on a lake and one has a big fenced in yard. To keep her cool, she loves running through the sprinkler or getting sprayed with the hose. If you have a water-loving dog, wash your car with them and let them get lots of hose action. Deogee loves this and it keeps her from getting overheated!
our dog club, chihuahua club of Hawaii does regular visits to nursing homes. It is WONDERFUL for dogs, patients, us. We have not had any trouble with our visits and have been asked by other homes to make visits. It only takes a couple of hours to make a BIG difference in peoples lives.
Check out local calendars for upcoming doggie events in your area this summer. You can take your dog along and join in on many activities. Rescue groups and the SPCA host annual events too. If you go to their websites or contact your local chamber, you can plan ahead and support these amazing organizations. We might see you there!

Kema and I do a “Date Night”… He LOVES frozen yogurt, so we do the drive-thru thing, then park somewhere to finish our treat – we have a nice park nearby… Then we go shopping – there are stores that allow dogs (Lowe’s, some Home Depots, and of course PetSmart and Petco) — we go to one or more and just walk around. Of course all of this is done late evening so hot concrete doesn’t hurt those sweet paws! If it is too hot, I put him in a cart. He loves the attention and I am always so proud of how he handles himself in public. Grownups and kids just love to pet him.
….
The local Lowe’s knows us by name! I stopped in one day without Kema – I thought the store was going to call the police!
#2 “Being a visitor” should only be done with dogs that have been temperment tested and trained. Your dog loves you but in a stressful situation (like a hospital), will he/she respond the same to strangers??? There are also dangers that exist that you need to be aware of in a hospital situation as well as HIPPA laws.
I would strongly suggest looking into some of the therapy groups in your area and take advantage of the training they offer first. When your dog AND YOU are properly trained the rewards are endless!
jj and his family mom and dad we are leaving end of june to spend quality time – we are going up north we have rented a cottage we are counting down the days we will play alot and do alot of sleeping and rest under the trees and doing lots of walkings.
jj loves sleeping in mom’s bed and momie looks for it every night —jj startes sleeping on the couch right beside momie while i watch the news than its time to go bed ….jj knows all momie has to say bed time jj runs….iam so proud of sharing this wonderful news with all our friends @dogster site
My dog “Abbie” has a set play date every sunday with her best friend “Caine” She loves to go over to visit him. They run and play for hours while “Caines” daddy and I visit. “Andy” was “Abbies” husband for seven years but passed away. It took she and I both a long time to get over that. We go to the park on Saturdays to walk. She loves the new scents to explore.
Dozer and I are planning a dog day at the dog park. we will have bobbing for tennis balls, rubber duck pick, relay race-dog is at one end owner will call dog-as soon as dog passes line next person calls thier dog, bone transport-dog is given bone owner calls dog- see how far dog gets before eating bone- furthest length the winner, easy Rally course, blind -fold people and see if they know which dog is thiers, there will be treats for humans and dogs should be a fun day
Max and I love to go outside on a hot day and run through the sprinkler. It really is a blast to act like a kid again and it is great quality time with my BFF Max
My dogs love ice cubes!
What i usually do with my dog is i go and in the morning we will usually go for a walk then go home and get a drink and a snack then a little bit later for lunch do the same thing…were i usually take him is in the park. After the walk we go back home and take a nap then we will start grooming such as bathing, brushing, teeth, and pamporing basiclly…after the grooming is all done we will call it a day and that usually is what it is for me and my dog.
I am a senior and do a lot of visiting family and friends at the area nursing homes. Nursing centers and homes in the state of Oklahoma will usually permit visiting pets as long as they are on a leash or in a carrier.
The smiles on nursing home residents when they see pets and children is worth a million dollars!
My beagle/blue tick Casey loves to go running with me in the morning and then hang out on the farm exploring the area while my fiancee and I work around the barn. He will even eat grass with the horses sometimes. I think he loves the freedom.
Like a poem: ….
It’’s great to get out to a place
Where the sights and smells are new and exciting, And a dog can run
His or her little heart out !
Race with your dog put them on a leash or let them go freely and…
RUN!!
I have also found that pets who have been pampered are having to be given up and my house so far has had room for 15 plus two pub rescues. Here they can sleep in bed with me and have loving care. My house is full. I do only take small dogs. As a 75 year old retired nurse and a natural health nut, I treat them like my kids.
Keep a close eye on your furry friend when outside because many dangerous plants are there for the taking.
My chihuahua, Bentley, loves the outdoors. His daddy and I got him a little wading pool for the back yard. We like to grill out and then eat on the patio. (Bentley gets a hamburger also…of course). Then we have an evening of “doggie pool party”. A great weekend “staycation”.
As you can see by my picture in the newsletter I love #5 Park it. I may be to old to run and walk for long, but I love smelling everything in my way, BOL!
I wanted to say that if anyone lives in Florida, St. Augustine is one of the few places I know of that is very pet friendly! Pets are welcome in almost every hotel, in all outside eating areas, a lot of shops in historic district even welcome your pups. Take him/her to the waters edge and to the parks they will have a great time and so will you. We went last weekend and several store employees even waited at the door with his leash while i shopped.
We take a hike and go fishing! It’s good exercise and fun for everyone involved! Definitely worth taking a few hours out of your weekend for.
My name is CAssanova. I am a Yorkshire Terrier. My Mom bought me a soft little monkey toy that sticks out his tongue when you squeeze him. They sell them at Walmart. Mom tied a piece of twine around it and swings it all around in the yard or in the house,(better of course in the yard). I love to chase it all around and try to catch it. She lets me of course so I feel good about it. Gives me so much excersise and it’s great when my Mom is tired or having a very painful day. She can still give me plenty of fun and exersise. Inexpensive to do as well.
A GREAT PET PLACE TO SHOP

Have your dog “help” you when you water your plants! My dog just loves the sprayer-sticking her face in it to stop the spray, then letting it spray her again. Endlessly fascinating.
If you have a pool, I drool!

My dogs love getting wet so if you don’t have a pool or pond near by and your dogs really need to cool down just get out a hose or sprinkler and let them play and drink the water. My puppy can’t get enough of it he’ll do it for hours.
Mercury Cruise Lines in Chicago has canine cruises on Sundays at 11:00 A.M. There is a doggy bathroom. The cruise takes you up the Chicago River, noting pet friendly establishments, through the locks and out onto Lake Michigan, around Navy Pier. Most dogs are comforted by the engines and lay on the floor. It’s a lot of fun!
RUNNING THROUGH A CORNFIELD IS ALWAYS A BLAST AND VISITING A STATE PARK WITH WATERFALLS!
