My Dog Is Suffering From a Bone Sticking Out Of His Foot

34516_dogfoot_4Question:

my dog is suffering from bone sticking out of his foot please help noone will help him he is in pain why wont any vet help

ANSWER:

Hi Roxanne,

What is going on with your dog? What bone is sticking out? And what do you mean no vet will help? I need more information, honey!

The one thing I can think of that might be going on and your vet is right, there is not much they can do is if your dog tore a toenail and the protective nail has fallen off. What is left is bone and it is very sensitive to any type of touch. Eventually, the nail will grow over this bone and it will be protected once again but in the meantime, it is painful. Most vets will bandage a paw in this condition and prescribe a short course of antibiotics to help prevent infection. However, there is not much else they can do until the new nail grows into place.

Hopefully this is what you are talking about as it will fix itself soon! To prevent it from happening again, trim his toenails regularly and inspect his feet for wear and tear after long walks or intense play sessions.

Email me at ann@ohmydogsupplies.com if I can help more. Good luck and give your dog a hug for me!

Ann

This very thing happened to my late dog, Sadie. It was the freakiest thing – the best I can figure is that she got the nail caught between some paving stones as she was running into the house. I discovered it when I found puddles of blood everywhere! Those toe nails sure bleed a lot. The vet did the very thing you talked about – wrapped it and gave her some pain meds (at my request). It took a few weeks for the pain to go away but she did suffer an infection at the site that may have slowed things. And the nail did grow back eventually, albeit in sort of a crooked way. I just keep it clean, wrapped it eventually in one of my husband’s socks fastened above her “knee” joint, and kept her off it best I could. I wish you luck, it is so stressful to watch your pup hurting!

One hint for helping it heal, you can buy rubber dog booties, they come in different sizes, in packs of 12. They’re intended for keeping salt and snow out, but I’ve met several dog owners who use them for when a torn toenail is healing. It may speed the healing, since it will keep the area clean.
