One hint for helping it heal, you can buy rubber dog booties, they come in different sizes, in packs of 12. They're intended for keeping salt and snow out, but I've met several dog owners who use them for when a torn toenail is healing. It may speed the healing, since it will keep the area clean.

This very thing happened to my late dog, Sadie. It was the freakiest thing - the best I can figure is that she got the nail caught between some paving stones as she was running into the house. I discovered it when I found puddles of blood everywhere! Those toe nails sure bleed a lot. The vet did the very thing you talked about - wrapped it and gave her some pain meds (at my request). It took a few weeks for the pain to go away but she did suffer an infection at the site that may have slowed things. And the nail did grow back eventually, albeit in sort of a crooked way. I just keep it clean, wrapped it eventually in one of my husband's socks fastened above her "knee" joint, and kept her off it best I could. I wish you luck, it is so stressful to watch your pup hurting!
