Quick Furminator Review – Does it work?
This Furminator shedding tool is aptly named: it terminates old loose hair, gets out mats, and is in general one of the best grooming tools I have ever seen.
There’s a valid reason for my vet clinic to sell these. It only removes the old dead hair that has detached from the dog’s skin and leaves the new ones. The manufacturer says you shouldn’t use the Furminator to get out tangles and burrs, but I’ve used it successfully for that.
It resembles the blade on an electric clipper, but you use it like a brush. A friend tried the large size for her Bernese Mountain Dog, thinking nothing would work well, and came inside 3 minutes later with a humongous ball of hair she’d brushed out from one little section of her dog.
It also excels for brushing cats and reducing hairballs; it makes a huge difference on my long-haired cat. It comes in small, medium, large, cat, and equine sizes. All sizes have the same edge, it’s just a matter of width, like a lawn mower. The blade can be sharpened.
Using the Furminator a couple of times a week for 10 to 20 minutes makes a world of difference.
Be careful not to push down too hard or you’ll irritate the dog’s skin.
Sure, you can buy cheaper brushes, but why? This one is far more effective and will last for years as long as you leave the protective plastic cap on when you’re not using it.

We have a Furminator for our two Bernese Mountain Dogs exactly like the one pictured above.
Do you have any tips for covering the acreage in an efficient way?
I bought a Furminator for my mixed breed. He has thick wiry fur that he sheds constantly. I keep using the Furminator on him for minutes and minutes at a time thinking that eventually it will stop brushing out hair, but with every brush, more hair comes out. However the next day, he’s shedding just as much as before. I suppose this is a condition specific to my dog, but I can say that constant use of the Furminator does not make a significant difference in his shedding. But with my little guy, I don’t think that anything will really help his shedding other than baldness. :-)
I have the large one for my golden retriever and i’m happy to say that this product delivered what it promises. It helped reduce shedding and helps thins out his hair making him less uncomfortable during the hot days
does this work well on short coat dogs i.e. boxers?
Diana – I’ve used it on my short haired mixed breed, his hair isn’t QUITE as short as a boxers, but the furminator works really well on him. Pulls out much more than the standard grooming brush.
I too have this tool and I use it on my short haired dog.
It works o.k. but does not prevent shedding. I must use it 2 to 3 times a week. I must also use other tools on a daily basis or I end up with short white dog hair on everything in the house. I have a rubber short nibbed mit that I scruff up his hair with. Alot of hair falls out when doing this proceedure. I then go over him with a flea comb. I then use a cloth(actually it’s just a clean dusting cloth that I got at wal-mart) and I rub it all over him in the direction of hair growth to pick up lose hairs. The last step is to go over him with a stinky surface lent roller. Combining all of the above proceedures and adding Omega fish oils to his diet keeps the house pretty much dog hair free plus gives him a great shinny coat, and he loves the attention!
I have the smallest Furminator for my short-haired house rabbit who used to shed masive amounts of white downy hair everywhere, all over my bed and any clothes or handbags or shoes I’d leave laying around – the Furminator has been great, I use it 2-3 times a week and have noticed a marked difference in the amount of hair left everywhere. I am very happy with my purchase.
We have three pugs that shed like crazy!!! We saw a demonstration of this product at Petco and bought it and couldn’t be happier with the results! Although, we would suggest using it outside because you get so much hair out it gets everywhere!! It also works wonderfully on my cat!
I just bought a medium sized Furminator. LOVE IT!! I have a long haired Maine Coon cat who hates to be brushed. I used it on him yesterday and the hair just kept coming out!!! It doesn’t shave him either. It only removes the undercoat (those lighter than air hairs that just float around in the room and are really annoying). Definitely recommend getting one. Not a gimmick brush. It actually works. Much better than a regular thick toothed comb. And my cat actually is starting to like getting brushed with this!! So 10/10!!! LOVE IT!!
I wanted ot recommend http://www.furminatorplus.weebly.com
