This type of passive abuse is known as emotional neglect, used as an ornament rather than a member of the family. If this family is too busy to take care of an animal's emotional needs, to train him as a house pet, and to interact with him, the dog should be given up to a shelter or another family with the time and patience to train him and integrate him into the family.

Very well put, and oh so true. There is a huge difference between a dog who is well integrated into the family, as opposed to a dog who is just the 'family dog', with no regular attention and interaction. Just an afterthought.

Fortunately for Lily and Winston, they are my other 2 children ; )
