I have a similar problem with my cats, although all three stay indoors. Not sure how they got mites. Took one to the vet, and she recommeded Revolution. I tried that, and though the problem is better -- they cats' ears are still somewhat problematic. I have been using a cat ear cleaner you can get OTC, which helps some.

Regular ear cleaning, every 2 weeks or so, might also help prevent the cat getting mites. If the problem persists with my cats, it's back to the vet. Fungal infection is another possibility.

Revolution is just pawsome! It's our favorite because it protects against so many pests. Hooray for "Cats of the Revolution"!
