If You Could Ask the President of Iams any Question, What Would it be?
Dr. Eric Barchas, DVM

Coming soon: tons of cat Q&A!

But first:

Tomorrow I will be part of a small group that will meet with the President and CEO of Iams and Eukanuaba, Dan Rajczak. He will give us a brief presentation. A question and answer session will follow.

I realize that it is late notice, but I am wondering whether my readers have any questions they would like me to present to the leader of such a major pet food company.

Please post them in the comments section. Post them quickly — the meeting is in 14 hours. And be polite. I’ll check in tomorrow before the meeting, and I’ll post later to let you know how it goes.

Full disclosure: Iams/Eukanuba has paid for me to fly to Dayton, Ohio for this meeting.

If your quality controls are truly in place and as good as you say, why has there been 2 separate instances of animals dying related to your food?

  2. Michelle Sikora posted a comment on September 10th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Do you use meat products from rendering plants? Where do get your meat products?

  3. Cathy posted a comment on September 10th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

1.) What donations/contributions/Causes does your company support?

2.) Regarding the new research that higher protein, lower carb diets are much more efficient for cats (i.e “Catkins diet”) , what are your thoughts on this subject and will this influence how you produce future products?

  4. Jenna posted a comment on September 10th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Is dry food an optimal diet for cats?
What are your thoughts are these concerns and questions:
-cats are carnivores and really shouldn’t be eating so much grain and carbohydrate.
-dry food is highly processed, is it good for cats to eat processed pellets day in and day out?
-dry food diets can be problematic with feline diabetes, urinary ailments, ibd, obesity, and more…should we be feeding high carb, highly processed dry food to cats? If yes, why?

  5. Sarah posted a comment on September 10th, 2009 at 8:48 pm

Do you see Iams or any other company of similar size making grain-free foods for dogs or cats? What level of demand would you need to see before you do that? What about frozen foods?

    Thanks!

Why do you keep your test animals caged 24/7? How is this good for the animals, and how is this a true representation of the outcome and use of the product? This is why I don’t buy your product or Science Diet.

  7. Sue posted a comment on September 11th, 2009 at 5:15 am

I am wondering about their animal testing as well. I stopped buying Iams years ago when I found out about the way the cage dogs and use them for animal testing for their product. Reportedly the dogs never get to play and have very limited time outside of their pens. I realize this is a controversial question for someone who invited you to meet them. However, other dog food companies do not do this and rely on other methods of testing. Why does Iams still do this?

  8. Coleen posted a comment on September 11th, 2009 at 5:18 am

    1. What is your rationale for including grains and carbohydrates in foods for cats, who are carnivores?

    2. Do you have any comments on the fact that http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com, a panel of independent, volunteer reviewers, rates your food as 1 star out of possible 6?

    3. How do you justify duping your customers by listing meat as a first ingredient, when in reality, you must remove the water before using it to make kibble, essentially moving it much further down the list of ingredients?

  9. Tami posted a comment on September 11th, 2009 at 5:35 am

I stopped using Iam’s years ago as well for their practices of testing on animals. Are they still using animal testing and specifically what test and how is testing currently being done?

  10. Valerie posted a comment on September 11th, 2009 at 6:51 am

Thanks for asking us! YES..my question, is on the ‘bigger’ picture…i.e. Proctor & Gamble testing on animals, STILL continues..and just WHY is this?? I have boycotted this despicable company for yrs, now. NO P & G for our family, period!

  11. Jailee posted a comment on September 11th, 2009 at 6:52 am

Why do you have to spray dry food with animal digest and meat flavor? If you didn’t do this, would cats and dogs be as interested in grain based dry food? Your thoughts?
Do you use rendered (meat and fat) products? What are your thoughts on using this?

  12. Trish posted a comment on September 11th, 2009 at 10:25 am

Why do you spend so much on advertising instead of investing in higher quality meats and less fillers as other companies have done.
I also don’t understand eukanuba and Iams being offerred as to different qualities for two different consumers. Why not make one high quality food.
Also, animal testing defeats the purpose of caring for people’s pets.

  13. Nachi posted a comment on September 11th, 2009 at 10:31 am

I appreciate being able to ask the following questions.
Can you tell me what ingredients are included in the “natural flavors’ please? Also, what are the sources of your meat products and where are they obtained.
    Thank you.

i have been told by several people that when trying to change from iams food to another brand of food they have had life threatening results. their vets told them, once their dog/cat has been eating iams, it is almost impossible to change to another brand food with life treating results. basically, once on iams always on iams because of some ingredients in your dog/cat foods.i also talked to a girl who went undercover in your lab. did a report for her college class. it was a 40 min report and she had the whole room in tears due to the fact of how the test animals are treated and taken care of. my questions are, what is in your food that would cause illness and why would you test animals to the point that would have a whole room of students plus the professor in tears ? also HS is always busting puppy mills, why haven’t they taken you on for this inhuman treatment of animals ?

My dog is very fussy and won’t eat dry food. Why can’t you make dogfood taste like “Heartguard”? I don’t know of any dog that doesn’t love “Heartguard”.

My dog can only have super processed hypo-allergenic dog food (right now she is on a prescription for Hills Science Diet Ultra z/d). We tried the next step down but she vomited it and soon wouldn’t eat it at all. Is there a chance that your company will make a dog food that is similar to the science diet z/d but possibly cheaper? Thanks!

Is corn in any form capable of actually delivering protein or is it a filler? If I see corn in a product, I normally avoid it.

  19. Nancy posted a comment on September 12th, 2009 at 3:40 am

Like several others have asked, I would like to know about their food testing procedures. I have never bought Iams for my “kids” due to stories read about the treatment of their test animals.

What are your thoughts on iamscruelty.com?

  21. Susan Lose posted a comment on September 13th, 2009 at 1:33 am

Why doesn’t IAMS (or other pet food makers for that matter) print the calorie content of their pet food on the packaging (cans and bags.)

  22. Vicki posted a comment on September 13th, 2009 at 11:33 am

    1. Are you aware there are documented investigation records by reliable entities showing that your company continues to use live animal testing?
    2. With the technological advances and techniques we have available today that do not require the use of live subjects for accurate analysis, how do you justify your continued use of live animal testing?
    3. Are you aware, and is it of concern to you that literally millions of pet owners object to the use of live animals in testing to the point they will not purchase animal foods from companies whom they know, or even suspect use live animals to test their products?

What would motivate me to buy your expensive product as compared to a cheaper brand that could satisfy my dogs just the same. (as far as health, vitamins and taste) ????

I HAVE BOYCOTTED ALL IAMS PRODUCTS DUE TO THE FACT THAT YOU PROMOTE CRUELTY TO ANIMALS STILL! GET WITH THE TIMES, PEOPLE! BOYCOTT IAMS, THEY STILL EXPERIMENTS ON CATS AND DOGS!!!

    http://www.uncaged.co.uk/iams.htm

Uncaged first exposed IAMS/Eukanuba’s painful, invasive and lethal tests on cats, dogs and other animals to the world in 2001 after extensive research through dozens of scientific journals.

IAMS/Eukanuba’s experiments on hundreds of animals caused kidney failure, obesity, malnutrition, liver damage, severe allergic reactions, stomach inflammation, diarrhoea, severe skin disorders, lesions, skin wounds and other painful illnesses.

Do you use ethoxiquin as a preservative in the food? ( I know that this question comes late, but perhaps they can answer anyway.

This may sound a bit different and unusual for a dog food question. But I am too curious not to ask.
    Here goes!!!!!
I have a Boxer. She has an area where she goes poo…
It is in my yard where there is grass. Here’s my question:

WHY DOES MY GRASS GROW MUCH GREENER AND THICKER WHERE SHE POOS????
This may sound silly, but it is true. I was thinking, what if i ground up this Iams dry food and spread it in a small part of my yard, just to see what happens. My neighbor said, I’d be wasting the food.

Anyway, I just had to ask. Maybe I have owned too many cats and have their curiosity in my blood now. :-)

If your dog food is so good why did my Dobie die from it in 2007? Why do you produce it in Communist China?

I think the real question here is whysuch a wonderful, informative vet would allow Iams to PAY for his trip to Ohio!! I would much rather foot the bill myself and ask questions that the public wantsa an honest response to!! I am not some super fanatic, and I have enough background to know that it only makes sense to test animal products on animals, however Iams testing dives deep into animal cruelty- WHY?
Why are they promoting their food as healthy when it contains so many un-healthy products? Look at the labels, Evangers and Halo (two decent foods) don’t have any of the fillers that Iams uses. Iams is nothing more than a trumped up, over advertised cheap food !
So why, good Dr. are you letting a low grade dog food company foot the bill for you to attend?? The good food companies, Dr.Harveys, halo, Wellness and many other fine brands don’t have the cash cow of P&G behind them to promote their quality foods, now they can use YOU in their adverts, and people TRUST you!!

  33. Jen posted a comment on September 18th, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Why on earth would you test how your products effect animals by cutting into their muscle and taking a sample?? To me, this is totally wrong and cruel. :(

I have seen some of the videos of what these poor animals have to endure! DO NOT feed them Iam’s! I could say so much more but I don’t dare! This product should be pulled from every shelf in every store that it’s sold! For everyones info, please read the first 4 ingredients in any dog food! If any by products from any animal are listed, DON”T buy it! Please do your research on any food that you feed your babies!
