Why Won’t my Dog Eat?
Dr. Eric Barchas, DVM

292957_1144132399.jpgMy seven-year-old Malamute quit eating. Her Dr. said that all
blood work and fecal, etc. were fine she just
won’t eat!! She stopped eating her dog food, and now
barely even eats p-butter.

I think it may be a tooth, but the Dr.
disagrees. Regardless of what it may be, how do I
get her to eat?

Animals do not suddenly stop eating unless something is wrong. To get your dog eating again, you need to find out what is wrong and correct it if possible.

A very large number of diseases and syndromes may cause a seven-year-old pet to lose its appetite. Many, such as kidney disease, bladder infections and advanced diabetes, are detectable on basic blood and urine tests. Others, including certain intestinal disorders, foreign objects in the intestines and most forms of cancer, are not.

I think your dog needs more tests. I would recommend X-rays and ultrasound of the abdomen as the next step.

Dental problems cause pets to lose their appetites rarely. However, if a thorough diagnostic evaluation fails to determine what’s going on, you may want to consider dental work.

I have a walker treeing coon hound, jasper, who is 9 months old and has a skin problems, losing hair and itching. We have tied a number of things, bathing with oatmeal , changing to a wheat free diet. Vet suggested a flea treatment, but jasper is flea free. I am reluctant to use chemical (advantage) treatment. Is there anything else we could try?

Go to a veterinary internal specialist, they will know what to look for and the correct tests to run based on the symptoms. Specialists are out there for a reason, they are THE most knowledgeable in their field and will save you lots of money and time lost in the long run! Good luck!

Michelle s- there are oral flea treatments, program & sentinel are the oldest products, but there is a new and more effect one out now called Comfortis.

You dog could very likely have an allergy to food (chicken & beef are the most common) or more likely to inhalant allergens- dust, pollen, molds, etc. I recommend seeking out a veterinary dermatologist in your area: http://www.acvd.org/

My 10 yr old Jack Russell stopped eating, too. He would prefer to graze throughout the day but can’t due to my other dog who has no issue eating his or anyone elses food! I started adding warm water out of the kettle to his dry kibble to soften and warm his food. He gobbled it up! I also keep broth cartons in the fridge and warm about 2 teaspoons up in the microwave and add it to his 1/2 cup ration. It works everytime. He thinks he is getting a treat added to his kibble. He even walks me to the kitchen with kibble for his additive! I too believed it was a teeth issue. Not sure it it is the warmth of the food or the softening effect; but all I know is he is eating again.

my 4 1/2 year old chocolate lab passed away recently. she ate on and off and her personality kinda changed too. she was more calmed and quiet somedays. her regular personality was very active and playful. a few days before she left us, she totally cut out on food and water. we still dont know what happened to her. she was still playing a few days before that but it just got worse. I suggest you dont wait becos we just dont know what is wrong with them. we were supposed to take her in on that day but she couldnt wait for the vet and left us. dogs can go without food for days and sometimes they just decided that the food was not good that day but when they go without food for no obvious reason, i suggest to take them in asap and get them checked thoroughly. it’s worth every penny to find out the cause before it is too late. i hope everyone will do their best to provide the best medical help for their pets becos they rely on us for good health.
